On the plane home after a few jam-packed days at @eastman.school Excited to share the first ever renderings of what will be the Beal Innovation Hub on campus in the coming year or two. The hub will convert the top two floors of the miller center into a space full of a immersive audio mixing rooms, electronic music teaching and workstation spaces, and in the center a beautiful flex sized project recording studio, performance center, or music space. Also (not pictured) will be new faculty offices for our film music program and the new 4 year Music Technology degree program launching in fall 2027, headed by @dennisdesantis Also part of the UofR school of audio engineering will also be using these facilities as well.
Technology literacy is a part of any artist’s required skill set in the 21st century - and I’m so honored our gift to Eastman will help make this a reality for these talented students for decades to come. It’s hard to believe it’s already been 10 years since we launched our Beal Institute at Eastman, and so many of our graduates have gone on to enjoy success in Los Angeles and internationally in the fields of film/tv/game music. The past 3 days I gave 9 private lessons to our composers and heard some wonderful work. Also a group lesson with our first year students on a scene from “Raymond and Ray”. The last special treat was a chance to teach a class of Professor Mark Watters' film muisc analysis class. This weeks class just happened to be covering a scene from my score to the Ed Harris film “Pollock” and it was such a treat to share this with our students and work with Marks' wonderful score analysis materials, so I could remember what the hell I did almost 30 years ago. :) - so proud of this two years masters program we’ve started here at Eastman. I love hearing the growth in the 2nd year students as the fully immerse in all of the wonderful learning that happens here over their time. Special thanks to Dean @katesheeran for lunch and the peek at these very exciting images of the coming Innovation Hub!

Congratulations to Anna Thompson '23, '23E on an extraordinary achievement! On March 22, 2026, Anna won the Grand Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in New York City, one of the nation's premier competitions for emerging opera singers. #AlumniHighlight

Joining Anna to celebrate the occasion were fellow University of Rochester alumni Miller Hickman '22, Cassius Close '22, Alex Mancuso '22, Noah Sesling '22E, and Ellie Wasson '23. We love seeing @urochester alumni show up for one another and celebrate each other's successes! Congratulations, Anna, on this remarkable milestone!

There’s a rare and beautiful piece on my album, Across the Horizon, that I wanted to share with you: The Concerto of Colours by the superb English composer Stephen Goss.

This recording is a collaboration with the Eastman Wind Ensemble (@eastman.school ) with Maestro Mark Scatterday conducting. Composer Stephen Goss (@stevegoss1 ) writes about the piece: “The impetus behind A Concerto of Colours is the vivid, resonant landscape of the American Southwest. There are five short, highly contrasting movements. ‘Albuquerque Turquoise’ attempts to evoke the wide-open skies and the dazzling bright light of New Mexico, the Zuniand peoples of the Rio Grande pueblos associate blue turquoise with Father Sky and green turquoise with Mother Earth. Clifford Still’s monolithic black paintings made a profound impression on me when I first saw them in Denver. The bleak canvases are sometimes broken up by small areas of intense colour— it is this contrast that I wanted to reflect in ‘Still Black.’ There are other references here too — Mark Bradford’s politically charged artwork inspired by Still and the opening pages of Dylan Thomas’s Under
Milk Wood. ‘Green Movement’ celebrates the beauty, but also reminds us of the fragility of the
South-Western terrain. The title ‘Nocturne in Blue and Gold’ is taken from a painting by Whistler, but this section of the concerto also alludes to the Blues and to the American Gold Rush. The distant trumpet line suggests Miles Davis. The finale, ‘Red Rocks,’ is named after the concert venue in Colorado located in a spectacular natural setting. The musical material is based on fragments borrowed from King Crimson’s album, Red.”

This piece celebrates contrasts and contradictions. The final movement, ‘Red Rocks,’ is playing with this post. I hope you enjoy it!
