It was great to join partners from local NHS, local authorities, charities and volunteer organisations to lead some singing at the Winter Warmth and Wellbeing event at The Towner in Eastbourne today. Here we are singing “Hey Ho, Darker Grow The Days” - a great song to reflect both the day’s theme and today’s weather!

As ever, Singing Mamas, @singing_mamas_org @singingmamas_uk will be supporting women’s wellbeing throughout the winter - and through all the seasons - warming souls with songs, hot tea, and cake.”

It was really inspiring to witness and learn about the local community work going on in Eastbourne where the event was held. I was particularly impressed with Jess Holiday who gave an update on the food bank network in Eastbourne and the effectiveness of their local integrated work.

What an honour to be invited into this space and for Singing Mamas to be amongst the crucial discussion of fuel poverty, debt and other local support structures👌

Big shout out to @sarah.singingmamas.havens who was initially invited for this opportunity but unfortunately couldn’t make it due to her singing mamas group being on a Friday morning!!

Also really wonderful to be there with @soundcastleteam!!
Soundcastle is an amazing charity using “creative music-making to boost well-being,build confidence, reduce loneliness and support communities”

The benefits of Singing for Well-Being is widely being recognised now and is being taken seriously as a creative health approach to the public health strategy🧡

Are you emergency ready?

Everyday emergencies like storms can disrupt the essential services you rely on—like your phone, water, power and the internet.

Taking a few simple steps to prepare can make a big difference, helping you manage while emergency support reaches those who need it most.

If you or someone you know might need extra support during a gas, electricity or water outage, they may be able to sign up for the Priority Services Register. It’s a free service that ensures utility companies know who may need extra assistance. Lots of households are eligible, including those of pensionable age, people with long-term illnesses, and families with children under 5.

Find out more about how to prepare and check your eligibility for extra help at: GOV.UK/BeReady

This morning some of the team attended the Hastings Youth Partnership meeting (HYP) at the newly renovated Hollington Youth Hub.

HYP brings together voluntary and statutory organisations supporting young people across Hastings, providing an opportunity to share ideas, good practice, and resources, and build connections. It was so inspiring to hear about all the initiatives happening across Hastings and St Leonards.

We also had the chance to look around the very impressive Youth Hub. Facilities include a fully kitted out kitchen, a music room, a gym, sports hall, sensory room and a room that can be used by the NHS.

A brilliant local resource offering so much to young people and the wider community in Hastings and St Leonards 👏

Thank you for hosting us!

Why do we see more vehicles hitting and injuring deer at this time of year?

Two main things:

rush hour coincides with the times of day that deer are naturally more active. That puts deer and vehicles in the same space, whilst we’re distracted and rush in to & from work.

It’s the fallow rut time, so deer are moving around trying to find mates and thinking with their hormones.

What can we do to reduce our chances of hitting and injuring or killing a deer (and damaging our vehicles, potentially causing a crash with others and causing injury to us or others)?

We can keep an eye out for deer warning signs - they’re not there for the deer - we can moderate our speeds around dusk and dawn; we can look out for eyeshine at the side of the road and slow in preparation for an animal stepping out; we can expect more than one deer if we see one, often multiple animals all crossing one after the other; we can expect deer to be in areas where there is woodland at the side of the road.

If you’re still unlucky enough to hit a deer, don’t be afraid to call 999 if the animal or a vehicle are likely to endanger other road users (or 101 if not) and try to give them a W3W (or at least a clear description) so they can get you police help if needed, and they can contact us or other deer wardens to come and deal with the situation.

Please be aware of fishing nets in our coastal waters

Our coastal waters are shared by swimmers, paddleboarders, kayakers, anglers, and commercial and recreational fishers. We’ve recently received reports of fishing nets being damaged or cut after being encountered by other water users close to beaches.

We understand that encountering fishing gear in the water can be concerning, particularly if you’re unfamiliar with where and how nets can legally be set. However, legally set nets may be mostly underwater and not always easily visible from the surface.

When can nets be set?
Under the Sussex IFCA Fixed Engines Byelaw, seasonal restrictions apply in specified areas. Between 1st May and 30th September, nets must be set so that at least 1.5 metres of water remains above the float line at all times, to protect migratory salmonid species. Outside this period, nets may be set in waters of any depth, subject to applicable legislation and byelaws.

Look out for fishing dhans (flags)
Fishing nets should be identified by clearly marked dhans (flags) at each end of the net. If you see these markers, keep well clear and never swim, paddle or navigate between them. Take care when entering the water from beaches and in areas where fishing activity is taking place.

Please do not cut or damage fishing nets
Fishers have a right to undertake lawful fishing activity, and nets represent a significant investment.

Cutting, moving or damaging fishing gear can:

🔸️Create hazards for other water users if nets become detached and drift underwater.

🔸️Put fishers at risk when attempting to recover damaged or unsecured gear.

🔸️Harm marine life if lost gear continues to catch animals underwater (ghost fishing).

🔸️Cause financial loss through the cost of repairing or replacing equipment.

Fishing gear is private property, and deliberately damaging it may constitute a criminal offence.

Before entering the sea, check your surroundings for fishing dhans and other markers and avoid areas where fishing gear is being operated.

If you have concerns about fishing nets or suspected unlawful use, please report it here www.sussex-ifca.gov.uk/report-illegal-fishing

A great day talking about care and support in East Sussex 💙

Our Bluebird Care Eastbourne team were delighted to attend the East Sussex County Council Care & Support Drop-In Event in Uckfield yesterday.

It was fantastic to 🤝connect with local care professionals, unpaid carers and organisations, and to talk about the future of care and support at home in East Sussex.

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us, including East Sussex County Council, Adult Social Care East Sussex, Care for the Carers, East Sussex Partners in Care and give a brief wave to DISC and Association of Carers. 💙

We were particularly interested to hear about “Let’s Talk About Care and Support at Home” and the opportunity for local people to share their experiences and views.

📣 Your voice matters. The East Sussex County Council survey is open until 30 November.
