Today Nov 23 (okay… I’m few hours late ⏰) would’ve been my mum’s 82nd birthday — it’s a special day filled with purple hearts 💟.
She’s been gone 12 physical years, 20 total, and like so many who miss their parents, I think about her being here now — laughing, yelling, knitting, buying dishes at The Bay, and just being my tiny (5’0”) but mighty mum. She would still be here had she been luckier in her 50/50 draw during her conception. Instead, she inherited a mutated gene — the same one that took her mother at 37, leaving my mum a three-year-old and 9 month old twins in the house, and the same mutation that took 7 of her mum’s 8 siblings in their 50s. Only one survived it. Their mysterious illness stumped doctors for decades, sending my mum and her Uncle Freddy on a mission to solve the medical family mystery. Freddy died in 1998 and donated his brain to UBC, hoping to help the rest of the family. By that time I was a career driven 32-year-old gallivanting across BC and Alberta, making commercials and the occasional animated movie 🎥. I knew the family history — so you would ‘think’ I had a pretty good heads up - but instead in 2008 when my mum was diagnosed with dementia. I was shattered (still am sometimes). A year before she passed, UBC called: they’d re-tested Freddy’s brain. My mum’s mum and Uncle Freddy likely had a mutated copy of C9orf72 — a gene that causes dementia and ALS. They suspected my mum had it too, and after my mum died, it was confirmed. If you’ve seen Dancing with Mom, you know where this is going. My mum and I had a wild, hilarious bond — and sometimes your film and your life overlap in ways you don’t want… but have to face. Stay tuned — there’s more coming. And please 🙏🏼 no spoilers! 🧘‍♂️ 🎬✨ @jdr827 @jujie_m #C9orf92 #alzhemierssociety #frontaltemporaldementia @ftdnews
