Super special day for us today at The Body Happy Organisation as we held our first ever in-person Team Day!

We're very grateful to @yorkstjohn for hosting us at their London campus for this incredible day.

It was so great to have space to collaborate, plan and work across delivery and research teams to think about how we can come together to build classroom cultures of body respect.

Here are some examples of things I’ve heard mental health professionals say about patients with eating disorders. I’m nervous to share them, but I’ve seen in recent weeks that these phrases are still not uncommon, even in 2024.

This is not the whole story, of course: there are many compassionate, nuanced professionals who are committed to anti-stigma and non-discriminatory practice. But it shocks me that these narratives have any place at all in professional discourse about eating disorders today.

The blame and shame you can become tied-up in as someone with an eating disorder cannot be separated from the kinds of narratives that exist about people like you. It’s important to examine these narratives: to see where they come from, and uncover the truths they might be concealing.

Untangling these stories can help us untangle the stigma that persists about eating disorders and the people who experience them. This stigma exists right up to the highest levels of the professions that should be helping us, not blaming us.

Let’s change the narrative. Let’s tell a different, more compassionate story.
