i have returned from #Benin. it is 2026 and you are #Black in the New World. Somewhere in the thousands of ancestors putting pestle to the mortar of your DNA is at least 1 who was forcibly removed from the continent, survived conditions which can only understatedly be called grueling, and brought more life into this world. That ancestor thought he/she was never going to see #Africa again. And yet, here you are, stronger, keener, smarter and more devoted to yourself than you've ever been; walking back through a door which was a door of no return.

Who are you bathed in blue come to claim your magic and clay? The beloveds @restorefellows have baptized you worthy as you have, them. They baptize you because they have birthed you new. They have that right now, to call you in and into, new names.

If your block looks different from your front door, if the morning glories at your fence stand straighter at your approach, doh fraid. Dize de kinda priest you are now.

De Dada say "consult the ancestors. don't emulate the Europeans" and then he travelled back to #Alladah. As we say home "plain talk. bad manners" The truth cannot often be varnished smooth.

more to say still about dis trip. me eh trippin. is you!

again nuff blessings and respeck to...

Rich on fighting for reparations for those impacted by the criminalization of marijuana, as the state of Illinois made the industry legal and extremely lucrative.

Rich Wallace is a brilliant organizer who has built EAT Chicago, a non-profit, community-led organization founded by and for post-incarcerated people, to build social and economic equity for Black workers engaged in the informal economy.

He talks about his winding path to this revolutionary work, the joyous days as a member of legendary Chicago rap crew BBU, how to keep the work grounded toward reparation and healing, and how these nonprofits can screw up that work for everyone. Plus, we break down the challenge of pants in this economy and ecology.

Hudley Vincent de Paul Bonair used to say "talk some, keep some..." it is an old old wisdom about what you share and what must bury. It is a wisdom that African diaspora people have utilized so as to retain what we have, but have also been cavalier with, as we reckon with the anxiety of what stories we must tell so as not to lose them altogether. #Benin and #Vodoun remind me. as does #Kalinda and #Trinidad. #kambule and mas, that we must be secret society type careful with how we tell what we see and to whom.

so it is with the spiritual technologies I've encountered these past couple weeks. But what we can all know is that to be holy is to be beautiful and to be in the spirit is to be dangerous. And we can revere aesthetic and be wholly respectful of the distance we must keep.

we are so blessed to be in witness of the inexplainable.

On September 19, The Big Payback came home to Chicago. 🎬

We joined @eatorgchicago at the historic Harper Theater for the first Equity & Transformation Film Festival: five films, each tied to one of the UN’s five pillars of reparations.

The Big Payback follows N’nanba (@robin_5th_ward) as a first-term Evanston alderwoman leading the passage of the country’s first tax-funded reparations program. After the screening, she joined the talkback to share what it took to get here and where the movement goes next.

Thank you to Ken Williams Jr., Richard Wallace and the EAT team for turning film into action. Support their push for HB 4443 and the Illinois Future Fund at the link in their bio.

I was honored to speak after a screening of The Big Payback at the E.A.T. Film Festival in Chicago.

Thank you to @eatorgchicago for creating space for these important conversations and for using storytelling as a tool for education, reflection and movement building.

There are some experiences you attend, and then there are experiences that stay with you long after you leave.

My family and I had the opportunity to attend the Equity and Transformation (E.A.T.) Film Festival, where we watched several powerful documentaries that challenged us, educated us, and sparked meaningful conversations about history, equity, justice, and the ongoing work toward reparations.

A special shoutout to Emmy-nominated producer Ken Williams (@kenctures ) for being a visionary, storyteller, and advocate for the culture. Thank you for the invitation and for creating spaces that bring people together through film, history, and purpose.

My family and I truly appreciate the invite and the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful experience.
