Later, Only Love Remains 🩵💜🖤 by Leah Swann 📖 💫

Later, Only Love Remains comes with a warning on the back which says “once you start reading, you will not be able to put this novel down” - and that’s about right! I stayed up far too late finishing this one!

The protagonist, Jack Wolfe, withdraws to his remote shack in the Otways grieving his wife’s death in a car crash where he was the driver. He is craving solitude, but instead finds himself with a new and unwanted friend - a vibrant young woman named Lotus. Then one night, he discovers a shivering stranger on his property and has to decide whether or not to help him.

This was an engrossing read. I loved the way the wild and atmospheric Otways setting was a character in itself. The writing is taut and suspenseful and once you’re hooked in you have to know how it ends. Alongside, the characters and the challenges they face feel raw and real and you can’t help feeling for them. The novel explores big themes including grief, guilt, regret, and the nature of love and violence (good idea to look up content warnings before reading if this concerns you).

I would love to see this one adapted for the screen - it would make for a great film being such a vivid story. I would also highly recommend the audiobook. I did a combination of reading and listening (which is my usual mode these days to get my reading in). The narration by Ebony Nave is really expressive and beautifully done 👍.

If you like the idea of a tense and atmospheric thriller combined with the detailed interior exploration of the characters of a literary novel then there’s a very good chance you’ll enjoy this one! I certainly did!

Thank you so much to @harpercollinsaustralia and @leahswannwriter for my copy 💜. 📚☕️
