“It captures something more than a sound. It’s about seeing. It’s about feeling. It’s love, it’s family, it’s protest, it’s joy and struggle.” —Ebony L. Haynes (@ebotron) on Roy DeCarava’s the sound i saw, currently on view at #DavidZwirnerLosAngeles the sound i saw demonstrates Roy DeCarava’s unwavering exploration of the relationship between the visual and the aural through photographs captured by the artist between the late 1940s and the 1960s with his 35mm camera. This body of work juxtaposes images of everyday life in New York City—elegiac street corners, deliverymen working, children playing, riders waiting for the train—with images of jazz musicians. Learn more and plan your visit through Saturday, October 31, via the link in bio. + Join us this week for a series of events to mark the final week of SIDE B: the sounds, a special listening room presented adjacent to the exhibition. On the penultimate day, Harmony Holiday will offer a reading, and the final day will feature a special live jazz performance, co-presented with Sam First. —⁣⁣⁣⁣ Photographs featured in order of appearance: Roy DeCarava, Coltrane #32, 1961; Coltrane #20, 1963; Art Blakey, 1958; Reggie Workman, c. 1956; Dizzy Gillespie, 1956; Edna Smith, bassist, 1950; Coltrane, Half Note, 1960; Coltrane #25, 1963; Couple dancing, 1956; Jackie at the barricade, c. 1956; Roy Haynes, 1956

I spent a week in London around Frieze with the AUC Art Collective, and I’m still processing all of it. We had rich conversations and experienced many conversations about patronage archives, and stewardship, and I reconnected with colleagues across the broader art community. Weeks like this remind me how much this work depends on building and sustaining relationships. I am grateful for every exchange.#spelmancollegeprofessor #curatorialpractice #friezelondon

Happy Friday! 🖤 Pendulum by the late, great Thad Mosley. As you make plans for the art you’ll acquire in 2027, consider sculpture. Sculpture brings a different dimension to a collection, adding texture, depth, movement, and a powerful physical presence to a space. Thad Mosley’s work reminds us that sculpture is more than an object; it’s an experience. His mastery of wood, form, and organic movement invites us to see the natural world differently. As collectors, let’s think beyond the canvas and make room for three-dimensional works that challenge, inspire, and transform the spaces we inhabit. Planning your 2027 acquisitions? Put sculpture on your list. #ThaddeusMosley #ThadMosley #Pendulum #SculptureMatters #CollectWithPurpose architecturedigest

Roy De Carava shows (us) how he photographed the infinite (sounds) of light and shadow. Right now at the David Zwirner Gallery in Los Angeles is an absolutely stunning exhibition of his photographs curated beautifully by Ebony L. Haynes. To wrap your head around the concept of visually seeing this passionate light/shadow moments of sound…a great start is to shoot some film learn to process AND PRINT these negatives in a darkroom. There is nothing like an analog wet darkroom print. PRINT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS this change how you (see) your images. #passion #roydecarava #love #art #life

Grateful for the Journey. Inspired by What’s Ahead. ❤️ During a recent taxi ride in New York, I found myself taking in the energy of the city, observing the people who make it work, and heading off to explore galleries and museums. I also began reflecting on how grateful and blessed I am to be in this season of my life. To have the freedom to pursue my passions, discover new artists, build meaningful relationships, and engage in work that brings me joy and purpose is something I never take for granted. As I begin planning for 2027, I look forward to directing my energy, experience, and resources toward initiatives that strengthen the art ecosystem and advance key elements of cultural economic policy. I’m particularly interested in how we create greater economic opportunities for artists, strengthen cultural institutions, expand access to the arts, cultivate the next generation of collectors, and position arts and culture as essential contributors to economic vitality and community development. I am equally excited about expanding my own collection, deepening relationships with artists and galleries, and finding new ways to bring together my passions for art, philanthropy, and strategic leadership. There is so much more to discover, so much more to contribute, and so much more to experience. And perhaps that’s what I love most about New York. It reminds me that creativity, ingenuity, and opportunity are all around us. Sometimes we simply need to look out the window and appreciate what’s possible. ❤️

____ 『Post No Bills』 @davidzwirner @andrewkrepsgallery @boogie_books_japan available at boogiebooks.com A collection of works that unravel the world of works by American contemporary artist Raymond Saunders (1934-2025). The walls in the city repeat the cycle of "construction and erasure" of being pasted, peeled off, and overwritten. The figure that is collaged reminds the viewer of the memories of the city and personal experiences. Post No Bills = It is strictly forbidden to put up bills on bills. And society repeats inclusion and exclusion. I think it is such a book that he continued to send art with a calculated playfulness like a light swing improvised jazz while having his identity that lived as a human being and "black".
