Byblos is a city where history isn’t behind you… it’s everywhere around you.

Often described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Byblos carries thousands of years of history in a setting that still feels alive. It is here that the Phoenicians developed one of the earliest alphabets, a system that would spread across the Mediterranean and shape written language.

At its heart stands Byblos Castle, built in the 12th century using stones from earlier Roman structures. From its walls, the city unfolds in layers, all facing the sea.

Nearby, the Saint John the Baptist Church Byblos reflects a quiet Romanesque presence from the Crusader period.

Down by the harbor, small fishing boats echo the journeys of ancient sailors who once carried cedar and trade across the sea. The port remains modest, where mornings begin with nets and evenings settle over the water.

The old souk, with its narrow alleys, leads through craft shops, cafés, and bars that define Byblos’ energy. Around it, traditional houses with red-tiled roofs remain carefully preserved.

Byblos is also deeply cultural. From its wax and fossil museums to its summer festivals, the city continues to celebrate art and memory. The Byblos Sur Mer Hotel, currently under renovation, has hosted artists performing at the Byblos International Festival, many of whom stayed there while taking the stage in front of the castle, including Patti Austin, Kenny G, Grace Jones, Jamie Cullum, Bobby Womack, Florent Pagny, Jethro Tull, Snow Patrol and many others.

And then come the rituals.
A stop at E Cafe, still an all-time favorite.
A meal at Pepe Abed, where the fishing club and restaurant have welcomed generations.

Byblos is the balance between history and life.
Ancient stones, fishermen, music, and long summer nights, all in one place.
