Vico Magistretti and Japan – Japanese Projects 12. Tani Moto bookcase, design Vico Magistretti, production @depadova_official, 1991 Miniature model by Elwin Kang @elwinurheart_ From the very beginning, Vico Magistretti’s work as a designer was enriched by references to Japanese culture and aesthetics. These references often emerge in product names – short, essential, easy to pronounce – drawing inspiration from cities like Kobe and Nara, or from personal names and surnames such as Tadao, Shigeto, Tanimoto, Sato, Tomita, Caori and Ozu. There are also visual correspondences with Japanese objects and architecture: egg baskets, rigid fans, temple gates, traditional tatami mats, curtains and paper-and-wood panels. An open wooden bookshelf, essential and graphic, fits within the line of research of the Shigeto and Sato systems, and takes its name from Magistretti’s Japanese client, Shozo Tanimoto, for whom he designed an urban villa in Tokyo and planned two unbuilt seaside villas in Aburatsubo. Crafting by-plastic [@marco.ciacci, 2025] is a research book and paper exploring pre-plastic material traditions, narrated through the hole of a shirt button. “During the winter of 2024, I undertook extensive research into materials and production techniques, with a particular focus on pre-plastic traditions in the search for more sustainable alternatives. [...] To explore this theme, I chose an apparently simple object: the shirt button, which has undergone numerous material transformations over time” The result is a paper that examines an alternative vision of bioplastics and their current state of the art within the field of design. In a world where plastic has become synonymous with waste and pollution, this research investigates the often-overlooked history of organic plastics and analyses contemporary examples. The study introduces a new term: byplastics, plastics derived from the by-products of other production activities. This research was Supervised by @anniina.koivu @brynjarsigurdarson and @paula_muehlena ; and led of the development of ACE, a diploma project of @marco.ciacci at @ecal_ch The scrapbook and paper can be read at @ecal_library The book design is curated by @giuliazanzarella Typeface: Rungli by @kplehmann A special thanks to Elio and Serena from @fratellibonfantibottoni Giuseppe Curto, and @stefano_curto Stefania and Dr. Davide Orsi @mazzucchelli1849 @ludovico_orombelli @gaiadupont @aartvanbezooijen @studiothomasvailly and @thenewmaterialist And to everyone who shared their knowledge, time, and support :)

ACE hearing aids are now part of ADI index 2026

ACE [2025] is a collection of hearing aids and wearable hearing devices, made with cellulose acetate, a bio-based alternative to plastic, traditionally used in eyewear. This material brings warmth, tactility, and function to the hearing devices, aiming to reposition hearing aids in much the same way glasses have shifted from medical tools to desirable accessories.
Developed at @ecal_ch @ecal_design , ACE is a master’s diploma project by @marco.ciacci , under the supervision of @erwanbouroullec , @camillebien , and @maxwell_ashford . A huge thank you to everyone who helped throughout the development of this project, and to @adiassodesign for the recognition. Vico Magistretti and Japan – Japanese Projects 10. Kuta lamp, design Vico Magistretti, production @o_luce, 1980, #Omikron, 1999 and @nemolighting, 2015 Miniature model by Pascal Ospelt From the very beginning, Vico Magistretti’s work as a designer was enriched by references to Japanese culture and aesthetics. Inspired by the traditional rigid fan (団扇 “uchiwa”), the Kuta lamp is composed of pure geometric shapes: a cast-iron or marble hemisphere, a black stem, and a large painted aluminium disc. It takes its name from the eponymous town on the island of Bali. Kuta perhaps represents the clearest meeting point of Magistretti’s exploration of pure forms and the aesthetic concept of “iki” (粋), the detached Japanese chic. Congratulations to Jonas Meynet, winner of this year’s SDA BA Award from ECAL Lausanne, for his project Latzoum. Latzoum is a compact emergency shelter designed to protect two people from the elements in isolated alpine environments. Providing the minimum space needed for two occupants to stay safely for up to 72 hours, the shelter transforms from a small, closed box into a functional living space when needed. Designed for the realities of high-mountain rescue, Latzoum is lightweight and can be transported by helicopter and installed in remote locations, even on uneven terrain. Its bright pink details act as visual markers in the landscape, making the shelter easier to spot from a distance. The shelter is designed to operate autonomously with minimal maintenance, offering a reliable and durable solution for emergency situations in the mountains. Its compact form and considered construction allow it to provide essential protection while remaining as unobtrusive as possible within its surroundings. The jury praised Meynet’s ability to combine simplicity, efficiency and formal quality, highlighting the thoughtful choice of materials, finishes and ease of use. They also particularly appreciated the shelter’s discreet integration into the landscape, as well as the attention given to its formal and construction details — qualities that reflect a strong personal commitment to the project. @jonasmyntt @ecal_design @ecal_ch #swissdesign #mountaindesign #ecal #designaward #sdabaawards

Vico Magistretti and Japan – Japanese Projects 9. Caori low table, design Vico Magistretti, production #Gavina, 1962 and @santacole, 2004 Miniature model by Ivan Jorge @Jorge_design_15 From the very beginning, Vico Magistretti’s work as a designer was enriched by references to Japanese culture and aesthetics. Inspired by boat tables, the protruding edges of the doors prevent objects from sliding off the surface of this multifunctional storage unit with lacquered panels. Lacquering was one of the stylistic hallmarks of Gavina’s production, with a clear reference to the traditional urushi (漆) lacquer technique. Caori takes its name from the daughter of Kazuhide Takahama (1930–2010), a Japanese architect and designer who came to Italy to design the Japanese Pavilion at the 11th Triennale di Milano, and later settled in San Lazzaro di Savena, working closely with Dino Gavina (1922–2007). ✨ Perfect Instance - NEW COLOURS ✨ Described by Bruno Munari as “useless machines,” mobiles are kinetic sculptures designed to balance freely in perpetual motion, magically making the air visible for a moment. In collaboration with the Japanese mobile brand TEMPO @tempomobiles (mother tool), based in Ashikaga, students from the Bachelor in Industrial Design (@ecal_design) at ECAL/École cantonale d’art de Lausanne, under the direction of Danish designer Nicholai Wiig Hansen (@nicholaiwiig), created a series of mobiles exploring different techniques, local craftsmanship, and materials during a recent study trip to Japan. UGOKU — meaning “movement” in Japanese — presents a selection of mobiles by Lisa Bernasconi, Loris Gomboso, and Lukas Streit, produced by TEMPO. The works invite visitors to interact with them playfully or simply contemplate their gentle dance. Spastic knife This project idea was born from my personal experience. My brother suffers from spasticity, and on a daily basis, I have been able to observe the concrete difficulties he faces, particularly when performing simple tasks such as eating or preparing a meal. The tools currently provided or recommended by nurses and medical facilities are often highly standardized, poorly ergonomic, and designed more for a clinical setting than for an autonomous and dignified daily life. Faced with this reality, I wanted to imagine a more suitable object that genuinely takes needs into account. This knife project aims to go beyond a simple assistive device to offer a functional, accessible tool integrated into a fulfilling life — one that promotes autonomy, confidence, and inclusion in everyday living. #inclusivedesign #assistivetechnology #accessibilitymatters #disabilityawarenes #universaldesign

📐MAZDA × ECAL 📐 A closer look at two of the projects developed as part of this collaboration. MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students Huiso Cho @huisu.cho and Martin Brouckaert @martin.brouckaert worked on a low table and a tray, on which the shape of the brand’s logo appears due to the heat from the cups. The projects reflect the dialogue between ECAL’s and Mazda’s distinctive design philosophy — attention to detail, materiality and the relationship between form and function play a central role. @mazda_suisse @ecal_design #Mazda #CX6e #ECAL #Design #Craftsmanship

Vico Magistretti and Japan – Japanese Projects 8. Sato cabinet, design Vico Magistretti, production @depadova_official, 1991 Miniature model by Nina Le Deley @nycaldy From the very beginning, Vico Magistretti’s work as a designer was enriched by references to Japanese culture and aesthetics. The wardrobe system Sato (佐藤, the most common surname in Japan) continues the exploration begun with the Shigeto system, sharing the reference to traditional Japanese partition panels through the contrast between the dark supporting structure and the lighter, modular infill panels.
