A two part chat with Garden Designer Peter Donegan

Garden Stories: From Humble Beginnings to Global Stages
Peter Donegan shares his journey through horticulture and design.
Peter Donegan's journey is a testament to the beauty and complexity of horticulture, blending personal anecdotes with professional milestones.

Roots and Growth
Peter reflects on his childhood, growing plants under his bed and embarking on his first garden at just nine years old. He humorously notes, "I'm one of eight children, the lower half of the middle. Nobody cares how good I think I am." This humility has grounded him throughout his career, where he's found success on large stages, from international garden shows to television appearances.

Creating Meaningful Spaces
Peter’s work is not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating spaces that evoke emotion. He shares a poignant story of a garden he designed for Australian veterans, highlighting the staggering statistics of suicide and homelessness among this demographic. "If we can make you cry, design a garden that makes you cry, then if we can design one that makes you smile... surely we can do the complete opposite and just make you smile."

The Power of Details
In discussing his award-winning gardens, Peter emphasizes the importance of detail. For instance, in his latest garden for a school in Sligo, he crafted a space that won the title of the best school garden globally, competing against multi-billion dollar projects. He notes, "It’s just logic, really. A courtyard garden in Sligo wins against a 20,000 hectare development in Portugal."

Lasting Impressions
Peter’s heartfelt stories resonate deeply, reminding us that gardens can tell stories and evoke memories. He recounts a moment when an elderly woman approached him, saying, "Are you the Irishman?" When he confirmed, she shared a long-buried regret about unspoken words, illustrating how gardens can serve as poignant reminders of lost connections.Peter’s reflections offer a unique lens into the world of garden design, where every plant and pathway is imbued with meaning.
