Stephan Micus will release “Traces in the Sand,” his 27th solo album for ECM, on November 13.

Dedicated to the sea, it brings together a dozen instruments the Bavarian-born, Mallorca-based musician has collected from Borneo, Japan, India, Armenia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Botswana, Morocco, Ireland, Switzerland and Bavaria. Recorded between 2023 and 2025, it pairs instruments rarely heard together: the Japanese shakuhachi and Armenian duduk over hang and African kalimbas, or the Bornean sapeh lute and Indian dilruba on “For Layla and Majnun.”

On “Light on Water,” three Japanese sho mouth organs meet three dilrubas and two duduks. Micus, who swims in the sea almost every day, says it has been an invaluable teacher. The same day, ECM issues his 1997 album “The Garden of Mirrors” on vinyl for the first time.
