one hand plays the machine. the other plays the air. ✋

@quray.music is a light-sensitive MIDI controller tracking my hand across X/Y.

X → mod wheel
Y → breath control

Both are mapped across the whole @weareelektron Syntakt at once — bass, drums, chords, FM, LFO rates, note lengths, all moving together.

The wobble bass rate follows the height of my palm.

50 parameters on the left hand.
Fills & mutes on the right.

It’s not very often to see hardware innovation within contemporary music instruments and it was so cool to talk to @quray.music founder @edberens about what inspired him to make this new expressive instrument with which he performed at @notations.hosq . Thank you to @nataliakupriyanova for helping film this interview 💙

Testing the @quray.music midi and CV interactive controller with @weareelektron analog rhythm and @buchlausa Easel
I had an amazing experience, thanks to @edberens

@blush_response you should check that device some day :)

Today we visited @cestbilisi and introduced Quray to the students.

We shared a bit about how the instrument came to life, connected it to a modular system, and explored together how movement in the air can become sound.

It’s always touching to watch people experience Quray for the first time: moving their hands, listening, experimenting, and being surprised. At some point, the device stops feeling like a device — and play begins.

Ben, @benwheelermusic thank you so much for the invitation, your attention, and your thoughtful questions. It was a real pleasure to spend time with you and your students.

Sharing some snippets from @edberens live.

full set on YT, link in bio.
.
Ed Berens is an experimental musician and live performer exploring the connection between sound, gesture, and space.
He performs with Quray, a spatial instrument driven by movement.
Sound is born in the air, and the performance unfolds at the intersection of electronics, ritual, and industrial atmosphere.
Electronics intertwine with guitar and acoustic instruments, creating a dense, alive, and physical musical environment.

One of the most mind-blowing discoveries at this year's @superbooth_berlin

This is Quray.

No keys.
No strings.
No knobs.

@edberens, the mastermind behind @quray.music, demonstrated us this awesome unit by controlling sound entirely with hand movements in the air. Watching it in person and trying it out felt like seeing and playing some mind-blowing instrument from the future.

Part instrument.
Part performance tool.
Part magic trick.

What I love most is that it doesn't just look futuristic - it encourages a completely different relationship between the musician and sound. The space above the device becomes the instrument itself.

If you're into synths, modular, MIDI controllers, sound design, live performance, experimental instruments or simply weird and wonderful ideas, keep an eye on this one.

The first units are expected soon and the waiting list is already open. Sign up at quray.music now.

Thank you to everyone who visited our booth at Superbooth, tried Quray and supported us)

It was incredible to see people interacting with Quray through movement and sound for the first time and gradually beginning to feel the instrument✨

During the exhibition, we also gave a live concert presentation of Quray — a performance where music is created without touch. Watch “Quray at SUPERBOOTH26” on YouTube.

Thank you to the Superbooth team @superbooth_berlin for the support and the opportunity to present Quray on this stage 🙏 #superbooth #quray #qurayair #superbooth26

Gesprächskonzert — Quray, May 9, 17:30, Kino. @superbooth_berlin

Sound is no longer tied to an interface — it moves into space.
Music is created without touch: movement becomes a source of sound, notes, and modulation in real time.

Quray is a performative spatial instrument where the space above the device becomes a playing field, and gestures become sound.

The performance by Eduard Berens transitions into a demonstration — showing how sound emerges from movement and becomes visible.

Come by.
