When @annvirginiabyrne and I first tried a @forestbathing.hi walk guided by Phyllis Look on Oahu in March 2023, we were hooked. But little did we know that 8 months later Phyllis would bring that healing practice to our island when our hearts were broken and we needed some peaceful reconnection with nature.

Exactly one year ago today, on 11-11 of 2023, Phyllis and I held a weekend of free forest bathing walks at @mauinuibg to help support the Maui community after the devastating August fires.

The response from participants that weekend inspired us to create #HealingTreesMaui, a yearlong series of free forest bathing walks around several of Maui’s serene green spaces.

Edward and Jenny Baldwin of @mauiforestbathing co-founded the series with us and generously provided the funding along with donations from @natureandforesttherapy (ANFT) and many other individuals and organizations.

The Forest provided its healing energy to a wide range of participants this year — and attracted half a dozen Maui residents (including me) to become ANFT-certified forest therapy guides with a desire to continue offering this practice to help our Maui community heal in the years to come. Stay tuned for more updates as we complete our guide training… And follow @mauiforestbathing for announcements on their upcoming walks.

Mahalo, Phyllis, for your ❤️ of Maui. As a guide, you opened the door one year ago… #ForeverGrateful for you, my friend.

Yesterday’s finale of our #HealingTreesMaui forest bathing series on #ArborDayHawaii was a beautiful combination of breathing with the trees followed by planting a new forest of 100 ʻōhiʻa lehua trees! The Healing Trees series — a volunteer collaboration between @mauiforestbathing, @forestbathing.hi and @natureandforesttherapy guide-in-training @joygalatro — has sprouted new Maui guides, new forests, new friendships and new dreams for the future! Mahalo to Edward and Jenny Baldwin for hosting yesterday’s event at their beautiful Idlewilde Farm atop Olinda Road, where their conservation efforts include restoring a koa forest and other native plants. Mahalo and deep gratitude to all the donors and location partners who helped make possible this yearlong series of free forest bathing walks for the Maui community. Most importantly, Mahalo to the Forest for bringing us together, planting the seed for this series and sowing an expansion of forest bathing on Maui. Follow @mauiforestbathing for info on their ongoing walks at @huinoeau and stay tuned for future walks by Maui’s newest guides as they complete their training next year. Much more to come…. ✨🌲🌲🌲✨

Last year, I finally got the opportunity to be at Peahi (Jaws) on Maui’s north shore and photograph some brave surfers tearing it up on giant waves! To experience this in person was quite special and something I will never forget! Thank you Ed🙏😇#mauilife #mauihawaii #bigwaves #peahi #jawsmaui #lifeisgood❤️ #hawaiisurfing

Ever feel like you’re out of whack with the world around you? Or off-balance within yourself?

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, offers a special chance to restore that connection with nature, others and yourself.

It comes with decades of proven research on the health and wellness benefits.

And now, you have the opportunity to experience it for free here on Maui.

“Healing Trees Maui” is a partnership between Phyllis Look with @forestbathing.hi and Edward Baldwin of #MauiForestBathing with support from volunteer @joygalatro with @pacificbiodiesel — all with the mindful intention of helping Maui, encouraging wellness and inspiring serenity.

They’ve organized a series of forest therapy walks for residents over the next several months. In fact, the next session is the first of its kind, happening in the blooming #MauiSunflowerField next month!!

You can also experience forest bathing at @lumeriamaui in May, @huinoeau in June, #idlewildefarm @edcbee in July, @mauinuibg in October and beyond!

It’s here!!! We’re coming back to Maui and teaming with Maui Forest Bathing to offer a series of free walks starting on March 16. These monthly walks in some of Maui’s most beautiful green spaces are intended for the island’s full-time residents, especially those who have been displaced by the wildfires, as well as those first responders, aid workers, and mental health professionals who served and continue to serve on the frontlines.
Find out more at bit.ly/healingtreesmaui.
