POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

was intending to post something else today but I need to shout this from the rooftops and document it to make sure *everyone* is aware ‼️

a couple stopped us on our walk this morning and as we were walking away, I’m assuming she thought I couldn’t hear her, she said “he’s very well behaved” ‼️‼️‼️

my boy?
MY boy?

I mean, he is, but for a stranger to say it 🥹 I’m absolutely beaming with pride and I will be riding this high for the rest of my life.

and I get it, this is expected of every dog lol - but to go from trying to pull me into the road to try to greet another dog, from me looking around every corner to avoid any dog that might possibly be there - hoping I’d see them before he did - from trying to sniff at every human we pass, from trying to befriend every single child… to the way he very rarely does any of it now.

and need I remind everyone that this is the same boy who broke two of my fingers back in march trying to greet another dog?

of course not every day is the best day ever and sure he still makes me want to pull my hair out at times. you do kind of sign up to that when you bring a sentient being from another species into your life though. not to get political about it either but this behaviour from a smaller dog is often seen as “cute” or “funny” - it’s not when a dog like pepsi is doing it.

about ~5ish(?) months of consistent work together and I’ve now got a dog strangers say is very well behaved. makes me want to tear up 🥲

now everybody say thank you @eddythedogtrainer

Rudy had the best time at @sensorydogs2025 yesterday! 😍

It’s one of those places that’s amazing for reactive dogs or those who don’t always enjoy a walk. Meeting so many different canine needs in one session whilst the human can relax and have a tea ☕️🥰

At our last event @sensorydogs2025 kindly donated discounts for our Beyond The Lead group and a free sensory garden session for our raffle prizes! 🤗

What activities, prizes and discounts have we got for you next time?! You’ll have to attend to find out 😍

Got a reactive dog? 🐕 Make sure to join us on the 1st November - click the link in bio to register your place via Eventbrite! 🗓️

P.S. Please share:
If you’re a local business that offers products or services that might benefit our group please get in touch!
Guardians of dogs with behavioural challenges such as reactivity, live to keep their dogs happy but that comes at a cost sometimes. It can be expensive, frustrating, worrying, exhausting. We might forget about ourselves in the process which is exactly why we want to give back - a little discount or a product that might make their lives a bit easier, put a smile on their face, a happy tail wag, a little TLC - it all means a lot and helps a tonne 🫶🏻🤗

Want to make your dog’s favourite toy even more exciting? Don’t leave it lying around all day. 🐶

Some toys are best kept for special occasions - especially when you’re using them as a recall reward.

The Faux Fur Squeaky Bungee Chaser is perfect for short bursts of chase and play, so bring it out on walks or during training, then put it away again.

💡 Trainer tip: Keep your best recall toy just for walks and training. When your dog doesn’t have access to it all the time, it can become much more exciting when it does make an appearance.

Sometimes, making a toy special is as simple as not letting your dog have it whenever they want.

Our last Beyond the Lead morning was a big success! 🤩

🫂 Full of lovely conversations, making new connections and learning - all at the comfort of being with other people who understand the challenges of raising and caring for dogs who can be reactive or quite sensitive to the world. 🤗

🤝 We were joined by local professionals on hand to talk to @patientpawsbysam @eddythedogtrainer @k9careandrepair and even @amazingbrainhypnotherapy . We’ve also had so many local businesses support us by donating raffle prizes and offering generous discounts for our Beyond The Lead group. 🥹

💌 Afterwards, you told us:
“It was great to talk to people who know your struggles. You’re not alone.”
“Thank you! I really needed it, probably didn’t know how much I needed it.”
“The thing I found most useful was just having a space to talk to others in the same position.”

Well, we’re doing it again and extending the invitation to the wider public! 🙌🏻

🐕☕️ Join us for another relaxed Beyond the Lead coffee morning: a welcoming space to connect with people who understand, discover local support for you and your dog in an encouraging and supportive environment.

📅 Sunday 1 November
⏰ 9am–12pm
📍 The Maltings Press, The Maltings Taphouse, Newton Abbot
❕This is a human only event, so please leave your dog at home!

🫶🏻 If you’re nervous - please don’t worry - so were we! 🤗 Rest assured that we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we don’t judge or give unsolicited advice. You don’t need to bring anything and we’ll guide you from the second you arrive. Come as you are, share as much or as little as you like, and take a little time out for yourself. 🫶🏻

👩🏼‍💻 Book your place via the link in our bio and share with others who might be interested in joining us! We can’t wait to see you there! 💛

P.S. If you’re a local to Devon business that could offer a little something to support the members of our group - whether that’s a little discount off any human or canine services / products that could make their lives just a little bit easier - please message us!

Want your dog to come flying back when you call? Make it worth their while. 🐶💨

Recall doesn’t have to mean ‘come back and the fun is over.’ In fact, we want the opposite! Grab the Fauxtastic PowerBall Bungee and make coming back to you part of the game.

Try this ➡️ Throw the toy away, let your dog have a good run and play, then call them back. When they get to you? BOOM - straight back into the fun.

They’ll soon learn that coming back to you doesn’t mean game over… it means another game is about to start. 😉

Who says recall training has to be boring?

A toy for every kind of recall reward. 🐾

Keeping recall rewarding doesn’t have to mean doing the same thing every time. Switch up how you use your toys, from a quick game of tug to a chase, retrieve or interactive game, to keep your dog engaged and excited to come back to you.

The BOB and Aero-Tug give you plenty of ways to mix things up and make coming back to you worth it.

Does your dog love to grab things... but struggle to let them go?

Teaching a reliable “drop” doesn’t have to be a battle. In fact, it should be a game!

Using two Aero-Tugs makes it easy to create an equivalent swap. As soon as your dog lets go of one toy, the other one comes to life. They quickly learn that dropping the toy doesn’t mean the fun ends. It means the game carries on.

This helps build a positive association with the “drop” cue, making it more rewarding and much less frustrating for both of you.

Training tip: Keep the second toy hidden until your dog lets go, then immediately start playing with it. Timing is everything!

Until the 19th July 2026, you can get Buy 1, Get 1 Half Price on Aero-Tugs with the code TAKEOFF. It’s the perfect opportunity to pick up a second toy and start practising those fun, rewarding swaps.

Have you tried teaching “drop” through play? Let us know how you get on in the comments. 👇

How do I understand reactivity? Meet Jax… 🐾

Jax is my 4-year-old Labrador.
The sweetest, gentlest, calmest boy…

…. Until you take him on a walk!

At 11 months old, he was attacked by male dogs four times.
Since then, he’s been reactive.

Not all dogs. Not all the time.
But enough that I can never fully predict it.

His triggers?

🦅 Birds – chase!
🐿️ Squirrels – chase & bark!
🐕 Dogs – over-excited… then fear (especially males). Will bark at, lunge and snarl at male dogs he is scared of.
🌊 Water – full throttle excitement
🐈‍⬛ Cats – chase!
🗑️ Bins & inflatables – fear
🕺 People – sometimes “hello!”, sometimes “nope!”
🎧 Random noises – terrifying 🫣

(It’s a lot… I know 😅)

Walking Jax means being switched on ALL the time.
No scrolling, no distractions—because in one second, he can go from calm to full 35kg chaos!

And yes… it can be scary.

It’s hard work, but I’ve learnt an incredible amount about him, his triggers and how to stay calm and distract him, and how to manage him past other dogs. How, you ask? @eddythedogtrainer is how!

I’ll talk about Eddy in another post, but getting a good dog trainer saved my sanity, increased my confidence and made Jax’s walks happy again.

Jax and Eddy are the reason for Patient Paws by Sam, and I am forever grateful 🥹 I wouldn’t change my dog for the world, and it’s why I believe every dog needs the patience and time I’ve given Jax.

To all the reactive dog parents out there - I see you, and I’m here for you ❤️

Excited to be trying @eddythedogtrainer ‘s November Confidence Challenge! I’ve been hoping to take a class with Eddy for awhile now, after finding her wonderful training videos through @handlersandhumans ❤️

It just worked out that this month and the topic of confidence were perfect for me and Adora to give it a go. For Week 1 we’re trying the two bowls pattern game. While Adora has done similar games like “Super Bowls” at home and for learning “around” or “go behind” cues, we haven’t done it with her travel bowls, nor have we used it to intentionally, gradually, increase confidence and focus in more difficult locations. My intention is to, by the end of the week, try this game at local pet store @petagogy — Adora gets *very* excited (and overstimulated) when we visit, because it’s a favorite spot but also there tends to be a combination of new (scary) people and known, safe people who give her treatos. We’ll be gradually building on this game in higher traffic locations over the course of the week! Starting out in her basement training zone (zero distractions, high familiarity) just to review this version of the game. Check in again next weekend to see how we did. ❤️
