DID YOU KNOW: 🏦 Florida’s First Female Bank Director was from Brooksville? 🏦 🍊Mary Alice Hale McKethan (1885-1972) was the granddaughter of Francis and Precious Anne Ederington. Her mother was Dorothy Ederington and her father was John Joseph Hale, who donated the land where the Hernando County Courthouse sits today. 🍊Alice married William McLaurin McKethan, and was the mother of Alfred McKethan, Dorothy Mason, and “Bud” McKethan. 🍊Alice McKethan was prominent in the business community in Brooksville when such activities were “unusual” for women. She was a director of Hernando State Bank (now SunTrust Bank) for many years, and was the first female bank director in Florida. In addition, she was instrumental in the founding of Brooksville Rock Company, which was later known as Florida Mining and Materials Corp. 🍊The philanthropy of Alice McKethan played a prominent part in the social fabric of Brooksville. Among many other contributions, she donated the land at the intersection of S. Broad Street and Lamar Avenue, on which Hernando County Hospital was built, in which her granddaughter, Sarah Alice McKethan Bronson, was the first baby to be born.
