Greater Harlem@Coalition appreciates the leadership of congressman Adriano Espaillat @repadrianoespaillat in forging ahead to improve safety conditions in Harlem in collaboration with grassroot organizations such as GHC. Our children deserve better, cleaner, and safer environment. We appreciate community boards and our elected officials @marklevinenyc @cmdianaayalanyc @cordellcleareforny for taking a clear stance against crime. We appreciate the persistent advocacy of other grassroot, business, and faith based organizations such as @mmpcia @hnbaorg @117to120street @125thstreetbid, @uptowngrandcentral and @gogm_nyc.

Let's take a trip back in time to Harlem in 1921. Men in velvet-collared coats and women in fine frocks buzz outside a stout brick building ready to see a ragtime orchestra in person for the first. It's opening night at the Renaissance Theatre, the first such venue in New York City built and financed by African Americans, and one of the only theaters of the day that welcomed Black patrons. To say that night of lively music and high-energy dancing was a success is an understatement.

The Rennie instantly became the social hub of Harlem’s Black community, where creatives, activists, and thought leaders could gather and thrive. Though like many venues, its light began to dim, and the entertainment hall closed in the 1970s. And then, in 2014, Harlem's former cultural epicenter was demolished and replaced with a residential tower.

In the wake of the Rennie's destruction, Harlem citizens mobilized to prevent other landmarks from suffering similar fates. Grassroots organizations like Save Harlem Now! and While We Are Still Here are working to save a number of Harlem's historic buildings, such as the Apollo Theater and Hotel Theresa, by lobbying for them to be preserved as landmarks. And, these groups are just getting started.

For this #ThrowbackThursday and bi-monthly entry for our #CollectionsChronicles blog, we had a conversation with Karen D. Taylor, founder of While We Are Still Here (@edgecombeavenue) — an organization that preserves and honors the cultural history of #Harlem in the face of rapid change and gentrification.

Ms. Taylor contacted us a few months ago to find the story of Black American moving to Harlem by ship during the Great Migration, the mass movement of about six million Southern Black Americans to the north and west between 1915 and 1960. The exchange between Ms. Taylor and the Museum’s Collections and Curatorial Assistant, Michelle Kennedy, touched on the importance of knowing your neighbors, the value of community voice in the telling of history, and how New York’s waterways connect us all.
