🎬 On Wed 1 July, Light Industry (@lightindustry) presents two films from the margins of New American Cinema, both essential to understanding its legacy but, until recently, largely overlooked. Edward Owens was a pioneering queer Black experimental filmmaker who made a series of extraordinary short films in his youth under the mentorship of Gregory Markopoulos. Remembrance: A Portrait Study (1967) is a portrait of Owens’s family in Chicago. In accordance with the filmmaker's preference, it will be shown twice: once with sound, once without.  Remembrance will be followed by Alain Montesse’s USS (1970), a rare point of convergence between the French Situationists and American underground film. Montesse’s film blends the small-gauge aesthetics of Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol with the political philosophy of Guy Debord, yielding a singular film-diary-as-dérive. Today is an enormously exciting day for us. We are wondering whether there has ever been such a concentration of excellent French avant-garde films in a single day in New York. At 4pm, the final program of the Teo Hernández cycle is being screened at MoMA, closing with Capital Paysage by Michel Nedjar, one of the greatest urban symphonies we have ever seen — a film unlike any other in its way of absorbing and condensing time and a space that feels infinite. Teo Hernández never made his film about all of France, but Michel Nedjar did make his film about all of Paris, and this is it. It is a unique opportunity to see this 16mm print from the Centre Pompidou (Paris): https://www.moma.org/calendar/events/11420 At 8pm, at Le Petit Versailles, nine French avant-garde films will be screened, most by filmmakers who have never shown their work in New York. This program, situated between formal cinema and personal cinema, between structural/materialist film and the filmed diary, brings together works by Yann Beauvais, Françoise Thomas, Scott Hammen, Rose Lowder, Michael Mazière, Jean-Michel Bouhours, Unglee, and Marcelle Thirache. Teo Hernández. A Pomegranate Orchard and the Bitter Well. May 14–26, 2026 MoMA @themuseumofmodernart: https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5903 The first sessions of the film series dedicated to Teo Hernández (in addition to SALOME), are devoted to his so-called “Tetralogy of the Body of Passion”. The filmmaker himself described his project as follows once he had completed it: “These four films are constructed from a set of references to the Christian myth, considered not as a story to be illustrated, but as an exploration of a vision of the World. The Myth is the Passion, the final struggles in which Being commits its integrity, and in the double outcome is fused upon a screen: the wells of bitterness and the pomegranate orchard. Mutation of the Void: the screen is the blank page where nothing is inscribed, where everything is erased. Christ, Oedipus, Narcissus are no longer characters, but forms of action; possibilities of the verb; alchemical fixations, dissolutions, multiplications, projections. The resurrection of the Myth is banal and we inhabit it without knowing: the bread we tear, the crumpled shirt, the cup at our lips, the fruit we devour. THE BODY OF THE PASSION is the encounter of two memories, of two skies: Europe and America entwined. A unique and mortal kiss in which each has discovered their hell and their glory. Strident birth of the newborn upon a red sheet of tears, wine, and blood. Abandoned child, with a tender hood of stars, promised to a dark future beneath the paving stones of History. On the occasion of the program “Teo Hernández. A Pomegranate Orchard and the Bitter Well” (MoMA, May 14–26, 2026): https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5903 Teo Hernández has a body of work of more than 150 Super 8 films, from which we will see a selection in 16mm these days, but he also has an immense photographic oeuvre that remains largely secret, in which he documented the shoots of his films, the apartments of his friends and the houses where he lived (and his own film viewer!), the neighbourhoods of Paris and their transformation, Marseille and the south of France, and certain habits of Parisian life. He portrayed his friends, family members, and encounters with filmmakers (such as Chantal Akerman, Agnès Varda, Manoel de Oliveira, Emilio Fernández, Jean-Claude Rousseau, Raymonde Carasco, Boris Lehman, Gérard Courant, David Wharry, yann beauvais, Miles McKane, Michel Nedjar, Jakobois, Gaël Badaud…), and on many occasions he was himself portrayed by his closest friends. Here we present a small selection of his photographic work. We can see, for example, the shooting of Salome, with the black panels and fabrics he placed in his own apartment; the filming of Feuilles d’été in the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont; the shooting of Grappe d’yeux together with Jakobois and Michel Nedjar; the Tour Montparnasse, where he filmed Trois gouttes de mezcal; or the Barbès metro station; as well as Teo Hernández’s travels to Marseille, Mexico (in 1989, when he shot Le Voyage au Mexique), or Fuente Vaqueros, where he visited the birthplace of Federico García Lorca.

We are very happy to share the program “Teo Hernández. A Pomegranate Orchard and the Bitter Well”, which will take place at MoMA in New York between May 14 and May 26: https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5903 Francisco Algarín Navarro (@franciscoalgarinnavarro) and Carlos Saldaña (@carlaspuerto), curators of the program, will be present to introduce six of the twelve sessions that make up the film series (each program will be screened twice). All films will be screened in 16mm, and Teo Hernández’s films will be accompanied by works by Michel Nedjar, Jakobois, and the MétroBarbèsRochechou Art Collective. This program is supported by the Consulate General of Spain in New York (@spaincultureny) and has been made possible thanks to the Centre Pompidou and Light Cone; Michel Nedjar, Francisco Valente, Alexis Constantin, Miguel Armas, and Enrico Camporesi. “A gesture is a cut in the fabric/screen of day. A cut must be deep and encompass sky, cloud, water and leaf. A deep cut forms a mirror, a screen on which gesture is inscribed” (Teo Hernández).
