Here’s what helped and why:

1. Blind weigh ins- takes away the control mechanism within my ED which takes away a ‘benefit’ to engaging in behaviours, also prevents a hyper fixation which allows me to progress.

2. Treatment decisions also including me- for example, my meal plan is decided by me alongside the team which means my preferences and life schedule are considered as well as executive functioning challenges. Things are at my pace, still being pushed but not too far that I hit overwhelm and it sends me backwards, considering my difficulty with processing/change. This way it’s more sustainable and easier to follow.

3. Not focusing solely on my ED and seeing it as a package including my ADHD- you cannot make one better as the other becomes worse, so addressing both means relapse is less likely. It also makes recovery accessible because my ADHD can make many aspects of treatment harder so adapting allows me a better chance of success.

Why does this matter?
It provides that..
a) treatment is not a ‘one size fits all’ and typical approaches are not always best
b) there is no right or wrong way to recover and what matters is making it fit your needs

In the same way that short people need something to stand on to reach a high shelf, accepting individual differences is vital in achieving success!

To reiterate, this is NOT about all and I am so very grateful for the professionals who have helped me 📣
(Also inspired by the incredible @finding_fi_ post!!)

Unfortunately, my experience is not unique and the system (although many improvements have been made) shout not be letting down neurodivergent individuals.

I made this post, not to put down anyone, but for awareness as I hope to use my experience to improve care for future patients🫂

Here is some advice on how to support adhders in treatment and reasonable adjustments that can be made:

- providing information around what to expect (the environment, treatment, professionals) to reduce anxiety of unknown situations.
- keep appointments, if ongoing, consistent to help with organisation e.g. in the same room/with the same person/at the same time.
- provide a quiet area for the patient to wait in, or schedule appointments at quieter times for sensory needs.
- allow for longer appointments due to processing differences, also information to be accessible and both written and verbal.
- allow for short breaks and fidget items to aid focus/concentration.

These adjustments make treatment accessible, especially because treatment must address not only the eating disorder but also ADHD for the best possible outcome 🩺

Living with adhd can be hard, don’t let anorexia make it harder!

I can’t even tell you who said ready meals are unhealthy or even why they said that.
Ready meals have all the nutrients our bodies need, they are complete meals full of energy sources that keep us alive.
Health can be defined by so many things, and looks different for everyone. It’s not as simple as food!!
If an electrician gave nutritional advice, we wouldn’t trust it, so why are we trusting strangers on the internet with no qualification in nutrition?

The reality of not recovering is miserable.

I’d rather be with my sister, not on FaceTime.
Drink a good coffee, not coffee that tastes like 💩.
Be in my safe place, not a space that feels the furthest thing from safe.
Cuddle my cat, not hope he recognises my voice on FaceTime.
Sit on a beach watching the sunset, not sit in a courtyard.
Play games in a cafe, not alone in the floor.
Laugh and feel joy, not spend most of my days crying.

I want my life to look like ‘that’ not ‘this’, and the only way to make that happen is recovery ❤️‍🩹

Start the conversation, spread the awareness- it could save lives 💬

Feeling as tired as I look (now on week 8 of tonsillitis/glandular fever and it shows🥲) but nothing will stop me speaking about this! I am in no way dismissing the debilitating, and real, struggles of those with binge related EDs. However, knowledge and awareness of the correlation between ADHD and restrictive EDs is very little yet still as real and debilitating. ADHDers are being failed by systems as their needs do not get met within treatment, causing poorer outcomes. Hopefully this will change, but for now, I will do what I can from my little corner on the internet ☺️

No bs here! 🫣

Yep, that’s just part of the reality…
Life is so much more than how you/others look, I’ve never seen on a grave stone ‘weighed Xkg’ or ‘was the smallest in the room’. Don’t let whatever’s going on at the moment fool you into believing life is better being smaller 🫶🏻

Some things I’ve discovered that help me through recovery that I wish I knew sooner ✨

I know I’m an ‘all or nothing’ and ‘perfectionist’ thinker, and that’s been a barrier for me within my journey. However, experience allows us to gain wisdom and that’s allowed me to approach recovery differently. Personally, too much pressure, comparison and a lack of self compassion have never helped. It doesn’t mean I am now too laid back in my approach, more that I’m learning to work with myself instead of against.

Lots more to learn for sure, but that’s when I will problem solve and continue through this journey 💚

New free resource on gut health available! 🌐🏥🧠

The gut does far more than digest food. It acts as a communication system for the entire body, influencing mood, immunity, and overall health. This new guide brings together researchers, clinicians, and people with lived experience of eating disorders to share what science currently knows about gut health and these conditions.

A special mention to Dr Mariana Lopes, postdoctoral researcher at KCL, who designed and drew all the artwork. Each piece was inspired by famous works you'll likely recognise! In a space increasingly flooded with AI-generated art, do take a moment to appreciate her real artistry 🎨

Everyone's body is different and there may be other conditions influencing gut health, but we hope that this is useful resource for many people.

Unlearning numbers are hard when it’s become habit for your brain to become a calculator 🔢
It takes time and commitment, BUT, it isn’t impossible to see food as just food again!
Here’s some tools I use that may also help you! 🍽️

My “emotional outbursts” were overwhelm and deregulation, but it wasn’t seen as that…

The hospital environment is overwhelming and overstimulating, especially for neurodivergent individuals, which means regulation goes out the window. This is why reasonable adjustments are crucial.
Reasonable adjustments could include, use of noise cancelling headphones, being able to complete post meal supervision in a space that is more comfortable for the individual, additional time to process things etc, give notice of change, using sensory lights, fidget toys….

This can aid regulation and reduce escalation of situations. Learning to manage an individual’s needs is essential💭
