📽️ Film London Jarman Award 2026: Alia Syed, 'The Dhaba - 1st Chapter: Mr Sharif and 2nd Chapter: Mr Bhari' (2025)

Join us for a screening of the Jarman Award 2026 shortlisted artists’ work and a Q&A with shortlisted artist Rhea Storr at Filmhouse, Edinburgh. We'll be showing Alia Syed's film 'The Dhaba - 1st Chapter: Mr Sharif and 2nd Chapter: Mr Bhari' alongside work by Rhea Storr, Ilona Sagar, and Sadia Pineda Hameed.

'The Dhaba (roadside Cafe)' is a poetic chronicle documenting the migration of two men to Glasgow. Arriving at different historic moments from the Indian subcontinent, their testimonies shed light on the effects of ever-changing British immigration legislation; the lived experience of the interviewees revealing the systematic obfuscations of colonialism and on-going racism.

'The Dhaba' is part of Syed’s larger The Ring in the Fish project, commissioned by CCA, Glasgow, which encompasses 16mm vignettes, photographs and audio interviews. The Ring in the Fish draws inspiration from the tale of St. Mungo—patron saint and founder of Glasgow—and the story of the fish and the ring, the title becoming a conduit for the transformative nature of both individual and collective narratives inviting an intimate exploration of journeys, separation, memory, and identity. 'The Dhaba' veers away from traditional documentary forms, centring memory and the role imagination holds in migration. The work counterpoints workplace rhythms of communal kitchen work and the concentrated isolation of domestic piece work, with an equestrian statue of Lord Roberts, celebrating his role in putting down what the British call The Indian Mutiny and what Indians refer to as The First War of Independence in 1858, highlighting Syed's interest in architectures of the built environment, as a vessel for both personal and public memorialisation.

📽️ Film London Jarman Award 2026: Ilona Sagar, ‘Other Actors’ (2025)

Join us for a screening of the Jarman Award 2026 shortlisted artists’ work and a Q&A with shortlisted artist Rhea Storr at Filmhouse, Edinburgh. We'll be showing Ilona Sagar's ‘Other Actors’ (2025) alongside work by Rhea Storr, Sadia Pineda Hameed, and Alia Syed.

‘Other Actors’ is a three-channel film, exploring the links between bodies and buildings, health and architecture through the lens of Paimio Sanatorium Finland. Designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto and completed between 1929 and 1933, the sanatorium represents a radical shift in design for health. Conceived as an "instrument for healing" the Aaltos' proposed an architecture designed not for the verticality of the healthy body but for the horizontal perspective of the sick. At the time of filming, the sanatorium is at a significant moment in its transition from hospital to a new purpose. As restoration progresses, the film examines its status as a building in flux. Featuring theorists Beatriz Colomina, Heini Hakosalo, and Peter Stadius, Other Actors asks us to consider what we do with the architectural legacies of modernism that linger in our cultural imaginary, and how we can platform those hidden behind its visual facades. Sagar worked in close collaboration with those who have lived and worked in Paimio Sanatorium, including former maintenance staff, workers at the furniture manufacturer Artek, and surviving architects of the Aaltos' design team. Other Actors is informed by collaboration with Aalto University School of Engineering, Kalasatama Undocumented Migrants Clinic, as well as the Tuberculosis Research Group at Leicester University and Imperial College London, highlighting an urgent contemporary perspective on a disease often thought to be a relic of the past.

📽️ Film London Jarman Award 2026: Screening and Q&A with Rhea Storr

Rhea Storr is one of four artists shortlisted for the Film London Jarman Award 2026.

We'll be presenting a screening of the shortlisted artists’ work and a Q&A with Rhea at Filmhouse, Edinburgh later this month. This is the eighth time LUX Scotland have hosted the Film London Jarman Award and we’re excited to welcome Rhea to Edinburgh for this special event!

Rhea Storr makes films that consider Black, mixed-race and diaspora cultures, including her own Bahamian-British ethnicity. She explores the in-between, translation, format and aesthetics, that depict themes such as masquerade, the performances of Black women, community space, and racialised subjects in rural or public landscapes. She has a long standing interest in the counter-cultural use of analogue film, embracing DIY practices and alternative spaces in order to depict Caribbean subjects who are themselves also marginalised. Storr was educated at Oxford University, RCA and Goldsmiths, University of London where she completed her doctorate. Her research explores the intersection of Black identities and experimental filmmaking practices.

Sunday 6th September: Edinburgh Art Map Launch (16:00-20:00), with an open discussion reflecting on Artist-Run Activity in Edinburgh (16:30-17:30)

For the final event in our ‘Culture Vultures’ programme, EMBASSY is delighted to welcome you to the launch of Edinburgh Art Map! As a part of the launch event, we have invited Khadea Santi, Peter Amoore, Mina Heydari-Waite and Jenny Hogarth to take part in an open discussion looking back on artist-run activity in Edinburgh.

With little visible history of grassroots spaces currently accessible in Edinburgh, we wished to focus on how artists have self-organised in the past. Rather than diminish the difficulties of running a space, especially as risk and precarity is unevenly balanced in the sector, we wanted to bring attention to the ways people have organised in various ways together before, and how we might adapt, continue and support all kinds of artist-run activity in Edinburgh in the future.

The event will take place from 4-8pm on Sunday September 6th. The open discussion will last from 4:30pm-5:30pm with the remainder of time being open for questions and the launch of the Edinburgh Art Map.

Edinburgh Art Map is a project produced by Maggie Ashmole, in collaboration with Glasgow Art Map, hosted by EMBASSY Gallery. Maggie works as a marketing intern for Glasgow Art Map, and as an Edinburgh native, recognised the need for a similar platform for the city. We hope that Edinburgh Art Map can act as a supportive infrastructure to improve the visibility and connectivity of contemporary art spaces across the city.

Come along to the launch to hear more about the project and how you can use it to promote your own events and exhibitions!

Sunday 6th September is also the final day to see ‘Culture Vultures’, which will be open from 12:00 until the start of the event at 16:00.

“Culture - a plant producing prize blooms of opera, ballet, theatre and art. Exhibited annually at the Edinburgh Festival and picked by the discerning few who descend on the city to sample the blossom- The Culture Vultures. But without the roots and the main stem the plant would die.”

‘Culture Vultures’ is a musical written by Donald Campbell and Helen Crummy that was first performed as part of the 1977 Craigmillar Festival. The inaugural Festival took place in 1964 and was organised by the Peffermill Mother’s Group; success of ensuing festivals led to the formation of the Craigmillar Festival Society in 1969, which became an internationally recognised community arts group that operated year round.

One of their most effective strategies, as noted by Craigmillar Now director Rachael Cloughton, was their ability to “use the arts’ incredible potency to create massive social change.” They often did this through musicals, which local people wrote and performed in.

‘Culture Vultures’ is a story of two festivals - the International and the Craigmillar Festival. The former being programmed for a consumer of culture, the latter revolving around the issues, needs and desires of a community. The plot touches upon the economic imbalance between the two, but also the potential for real change and action offered by the arts.

At a time where Scotland’s cultural sector at large seems ever more detached from those living within it, nearly 50 years later the story is more pertinent than ever.

Amidst the August commotion Embassy invites its audiences to pause and reflect on the legacy of a community festival, to think about how we might take action to demand structural change today. The surrounding events programme will engage with the themes of the script, focusing on their significance alongside interconnected contemporary struggles of economic depravity, rising facism and an ongoing Palestinian genocide.

Archival footage of the original 1977 performance and the script will be available to read in the space. To view the full archive please visit and volunteer with @craigmillarnow. We endlessly grateful for all the support, enthusiasm and time that they have given us.
