I didn’t think 33 would come with some of the hardest lessons of my life. Losing my Mom and Yanna and I losing our child so early in pregnancy changed me in ways I’m still figuring out. There were days when getting out of bed was all I had in me. No big accomplishments, no pretending I had it figured out. Just getting through the day and doing it all over again.

I spent most of this year under a dark cloud. Eventually, I learned to pack an umbrella. Not because the storm passed, but because life doesn’t stop just because you’re hurting. You either learn how to carry it or let it consume you. Some days, I did a better job than others.

I’ve always been the person people could lean on. This year taught me what it feels like to need that same support and how hard it is to admit when you’re not okay. I learned that being strong doesn’t mean keeping everything to yourself, and being vulnerable doesn’t make you any less of a man. Sometimes, you just have to stop telling everybody you’re good when you know damn well you’re not.

But I’m still here, and I know what I have to be grateful for. My wife, who has stood beside me through the worst of it. The childhood home that’s now the place where we get to build our own life. My Dad, my family, and the friends who kept checking in even when I kept giving them that same bullshit answer that I was okay. Looking back, I appreciate the people who saw through it and showed up anyway. I’ll never take that for granted.

This year took a lot out of me, but it also forced me to look at myself differently. As a husband, a son, a barber , and a man. I’m learning that I don’t have to have every answer, carry every burden, or be everybody’s backbone all the time. I can hurt, I can struggle, and I can have days where I’m not myself without feeling like I’ve failed at being who I am.

As hard as chapter 33 was, a lot of amazing memories were created.

I’m walking into 34 with a different perspective. Less concerned with having everything figured out, more protective of my peace, and a lot more aware of who and what matters.

Year 34, on the way ✌️
