Kyle Marshall writes, “There is something special about the sanctuary in St. Mark’s Church. Whether it is the legacy of dancers who have stepped onto its honey-colored wood floor or the touch of the enslaved Americans who more than likely built its walls in 1799, the space resonates with a quiet spirit and provides a fertile ground for creation.

‘Bound’ is a cryptic work, one layered with subtext, coded movement and subversive sound. It spans time through the words of Fredrick Douglass, voices of today and declarations for a future yet to be seen. Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church provides a timeless space for ‘Bound’’s world premiere.

During the tense week of our country’s midterm elections, may this dance be an opportunity for us to witness our shared humanity and may Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church continue to be refuge for our community to harness the power of our assembly into movement, fellowship, and action.”

We are trilled to announce BOUND will premiere November 5-7th 7:30p at @danspaceproject at St. Mark’s Church (@stmarksbowery) in NYC!! Ticket link is in bio.

Moving beyond the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, Bound is a dance to manifest a new destiny recalling Black Americans’ history of covert strategies for liberation.

Sourcing text by Fredrick Douglass and performers, with visual design (set, costume, text advisement and projections) by KMC Creative Director @edotastic , this cast of five Black performers; Justin Daniels( @ayo.justn ), Khalid Dunton @k.d.ance, Kyle Marshall, @kellyesmith_ and Syd Worthy ( @goldengirlsyd )will explore (sub)text and subversive actions by embodying words, gestures, and rhythms that examine American ideals and realities.

Live sound design by @cal._.fish and @kwamiwinfield will blend traditional western instruments with radio and electronics to encode the sonic pulse and cultural legacy of the USA. Stage manager Emily Wong @emilylikey and Managing Director @_madzbrooke_ . Photos by @sabrinapalko

The summer concluded with a one week residency with creative director @edotastic at the beautiful @62center for theater and dance at @williamscollege! During this time we worked on new visual surprises and movement ideas for my repertory course at @slcdanceprogram this fall. KMC will have some big announcements for our fall programming soon! Stay tuned and enjoy these last days of August.

This visual art project had been in-progress by Edo for many years. I was awed by his multi-disciplinary, maximalist approach that incorporated sculpture, prints, lighting, video and poetry. KYLE MARSHALL & EDO TASTIC (AUG 3 - AUG 16)

The third and final studio residents of Echo Arts are choreographer Kyle Marshall and visual artist Edo Tastic. During their studio residency the artists will work onsite, using KAJE as a temporary studio alongside Ada Friedman.

On August 16 from 4-6PM, Kyle and Edo present an open rehearsal program with performance art by Kyle Marshall (@kmchoreo) and sounds by musician Kwami Winfield (@kwamiwinfield).

“Land Here! is a collection of glorious chaos, exploring different facets of ADHD: productivity, hyperactivity, hyperfocus, and impulsivity, washed in a vibrant, flowing palette. Opening night of Femenine at the @batesdancefestival!! One more show to go as we celebrate the cornerstone of our Julius Eastman Trilogy. Big thank you to the KMC team- creative director @edotastic, performers @niarahardister @goldengirlsyd @josesitolapaz @alex_francois and @k.d.ance Lighting by @connorsalelight supervised by Sage Green, stage management by @emilylikey and company manager @_madzbrooke_ .

Thank yous are also in order for Shoni Currier, the BDF community, interns and staff for welcoming us into your festival with such care and support. I am so excited to share Femenine in repertory with the students next week.

KMC just completed a two week teaching/repertory residency at the University of Iowa ending my Grant Wood Fellowship. I am so proud of my students and the company for such brilliant dancing, artistry and community. After a year of traveling to/from Iowa City, I am grateful for my community and family in NYC/NJ and look forward to reconnecting soon.

We will be sharing more of Bound in the next coming months. In the meantime, Gay is performing @arthouseproductions focus series June 4th 7:30p in Jersey City followed by a KMC reception.
