TEACHER: You’re helping everyone stay in their OK Zone. Meanwhile, you’re one email away from leaving yours. 😬

We teach kids to regulate. Teachers needse nervous system hacks, too.

-Look around. Notice 3 pleasant or neutral things.
-Feel the floor or chair supporting you.
-Think of a favorite person, place, thing, or memory.

Then TRACK: What changed inside? Even a 1% shift counts.

You deserve the same care you give your students.

I’m teaching these strategies—and how to embed them into EduProtocols—at VIBE SHIFT, tomorrow, October 17. Virtual. Practical. Ready for Monday.

WHAT IF TEACHING KIDS TO FEEL THEIR OWN BODIES COULD HELP THEM FEEL FOR OTHERS?

A racing heart. A tight chest. A clenched jaw. These aren't just sensations. They're information. And teaching kids to notice them has a name:🔥 INTEROCEPTION.

Here's where the neuroscience gets fascinating. Interoception engages the INSULA—a brain region involved in body awareness and empathy-related processing.

Researchers studying 121 incarcerated men found that the brain responded differently when participants imagined their OWN pain versus SOMEONE ELSE'S pain. (Decety et al., 2013)

Other research shows that interoceptive training can change how the insula communicates with other brain regions. (Sugawara et al., 2024)

💛 THE CLASSROOM CONNECTION? When we teach kids to notice what's happening inside themselves, we're giving them a foundation for understanding their emotions—and opportunities to practice empathy toward others.

We're not just teaching kids to calm down. We're teaching them to NOTICE themselves so they can better CONNECT with others.

That's why we Regulate to Educate. NOTICE → CHOOSE → PRACTICE → RETURN Students learn to notice when they're leaving their OK Zone, choose a regulation strategy, practice it, and find their way back toward regulation and learning.

Because the goal isn't a classroom full of perfectly calm kids. THE GOAL IS AGENCY. Kids who can read their bodies, recognize the shift, and know what to try next.

You can't regulate what you can't recognize. And what we learn to recognize in ourselves can help us practice understanding others.

We tell kids to calm down. Have we taught them how to notice the shift?

“My chest is tight.” “My body is going quiet.”

Those sensations are information. A student who notices them can recognize they’re leaving their OK Zone, and choose what to try next.

Regulate to Educate EduProtocols make that practice repeatable: NOTICE → CHOOSE → PRACTICE → RETURN Notice the shift. Choose a tool. Practice it. Find your way back toward learning.

The goal isn’t a classroom full of perfectly calm kids. The goal is agency: kids who can read their bodies and know what they can try next.

Trauma-informed is not the same as trauma-equipped.

We’ve taught teachers what ACEs are. We’ve taught them what dysregulation looks like. We’ve told them behavior is communication.

But when a dysregulated nervous system takes over your classroom—what do you actually DO?

That’s the missing piece.

Regulate to Educate EPs gives teachers and students a simple, repeatable process:
NOTICE → CHOOSE → PRACTICE → RETURN

Students learn to notice when they’re leaving their OK Zone, choose a regulation strategy, practice it, and find their way back toward regulation and learning.
Because the goal isn’t a classroom full of perfectly calm kids.

The goal is agency.
Kids who can read their bodies, recognize the shift, and know what they can try next.
Awareness matters. Strategy changes what happens next.

Students’ nervous systems don’t learn safety in isolation.

Whether a student has one ACE, many ACEs or a story we may never know—safe, connected experiences matter.

ACEs can shape what a nervous system expects. They do not determine a student’s future. Because regulation is relational.
A steady adult.
A supportive peer.
Connection without shame.

Nervous systems learn from what happens again and again.
They don’t change because we say: “Calm down.” They change through repeated experiences of: SAFETY. CONNECTION. CHOICE.

Each time a student notices a sensation, chooses a resource and returns toward their OK Zone, they strengthen a new pathway.
One regulation activity won’t create a new baseline. But reps can.
REPS.
REPS.
REPS.
Notice. Choose. Practice. Return.
Over time: “I’m losing control.” can become: “I notice the shift—and I know what I can try.”
The goal is not constant calm. The goal is agency—and knowing we don’t have to find our way back alone. This is true for adults, too. 💛

Some kids, and adults, with high ACE scores get REALLY good at surviving.

ACEs = Adverse Childhood Experiences—early exposure to things like abuse, neglect, violence, or serious instability.

Sometimes we get so good at surviving…
we don’t even recognize when our body is stuck in survival mode.
Overthinking.
Can’t shut your brain off.
Heart racing.
Stomach tight.
Always on edge.
Can’t sit still.
Or completely shut down.

You can’t regulate what you can’t recognize.

That’s why we teach interoception—how to notice what’s happening inside.
Notice it. Track it. Know what helps.
And my favorite part? 💛

My middle school peer mentors are learning these skills by teaching them to our littles.

And some of my wiggiest middle schoolers? They become the BEST teachers. Kids teaching kids. Agency building agency.

We teach kids to read words, numbers and data. Let’s teach them to read themselves. Don’t wait for the crisis to teach the tools. Teach them early. Teach them forward. That’s Regulate to Educate.

📝 THIN SLIDE + GIANT POST-ITS = BIG THINKING

My favorite part of class yesterday? Students took a giant Post-it and chose the #1 reason they believed caused American independence.

Then the real thinking started.

➡️ Tables ranked the reasons.
➡️ Round 1: Every table got a turn to add.
➡️ No repeats.
➡️ Round 2: You could reshuffle ONLY if you added a new reason.
➡️ Repeat until the class reached consensus.

Simple protocol. Lots of movement, discussion, evidence, and thinking.

Sometimes the best tech is a giant Post-it note. 📝🔥

POV: You lost your cool with a student—and thought you ruined the relationship.

You didn’t.

Repair teaches students something perfection never could:

Conflict can happen.
We can reconnect.
We can be okay again.

A simple, “I’m sorry. We’re okay,” can help a student feel safe, return to their OK Zone and become available for learning again.

Repair is regulation.
Repair is co-regulation.
Repair matters more than perfection. 💛

POV: You thought my students were coloring gingerbread men, but they were actually learning to read their nervous systems.

Using the Sketch & Tell EduProtocol, they noticed warm chests, slower heartbeats, relaxed shoulders, tight stomachs, safety, comfort and nervousness.

Some felt settled. Others felt activated. Neither state was wrong - it was information.

Before kids can choose a regulation skill, they have to notice the shift. When we teach them to track their bodies, they gain the awareness and agency to recognize when they are leaving their OK Zone and find their way back.

The goal is not constant calm. The goal is agency.

These are not just cute drawings. They are maps of our students’ nervous systems—and pathways back to wellness.

POV: Your middle schoolers don’t hate regulation. They hate when regulation feels cringe. 😬

So stop making it feel like a wellness lesson.Make it theirs. I had my students build their own OK Zone Playlist:
🎧 Chill vibes
🔥 Lock-in Song
🏀 Athletic vibes
🎉 Party time

Then we racked and stacked Thin Slides + Sketch & Tell and tracked what changed INSIDE their bodies as they listened.
Heart rate. Muscle tension.Where they felt the calm.

I’m not telling them to “calm down.” They’re discovering what actually shifts their own state. And because it’s THEIR music? They buy in.

That’s the move with secondary students: Make it relevant. Make it theirs.

That’s Regulate to Educate.
We’re not teaching kids to be calm. We’re giving them the tools to understand and shift their own nervous system.

Now THAT’S agency.

Stop asking a dysregulated brain to work harder. Help it feel safer first.

RJ chose a fond memory: Disneyland.

He pictured it.
Noticed the wellness inside.
Tracked the sensations with a Sketch & Tell.

Now, when RJ moves out of his OK Zone, he has a pathway back.

Picture it. Notice it. Track it.

Simple. Student-owned. A skill for life.

Want to try it?
