One year ago today, students at Wheeler High School walked out, filling the rows of our football stadium with pleas for change.

Following the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School, Wheeler joined schools across Georgia in walking out of our classes. In doing so, we sought to honor the four innocent lives taken at Apalachee and demand immediate action on gun violence.

The statement we made that day to lawmakers and news channels alike still stands today, a year later. Gun violence is too common. Every school and community is vulnerable, and it claims lives every single day throughout our country. Sadly, these acts of violence have only continued to grow, which is why we emphasize that the fight for change is not over.

On the one year anniversary of the Wheeler High School walkout, in correspondence with schools statewide ( @georgiayouthco ) on 9.20.24, we ask that you please use your civic voice to continue to call for change.

We, as students, shouldn’t feel safer walking out of school, than walking to class; it is owed to us that our elected officials work harder to protect kids, not guns.
We hope that students today will be remembered for the mark they have made on this country. That’s because our drive for change will not be fulfilled until we’re confident that we will return home from school, not just today, but every day. 💙💛📢🪧🕊️
