![**To My Daughter, On Your 21st Birthday**
Twenty-one years ago, a star was born. Today I'm shared your full birth story with you. I'm sure your father has shared pieces of it, but I carried every moment, every turn, every quiet mile of the road that brought you into this world.
There was a time I thought I might lose you. I remember the fear of that season, how thin the ground felt under me. But you kept sending me signs, small and stubborn, that you were still there, still present, still on your way to me. You have been fighting for your place in this world since before I ever held you, and something tells me you haven't stopped fighting for what's yours since.
And who you are today is extraordinary. You are beauty, not just in how you carry yourself but in your spirit. You are joy that walks into a room before you do. You have a heart that is soft and open, and somehow, in the same breath, you are fierce. You act. You move. You don't just hope for things, you go get them. Your elegance draws people in, and then your humor undoes them completely, that sharp, easy wit that catches people off guard and leaves them laughing before they know what happened. You are a rare combination, the rarest jewel in the world.
I've thought a lot about the numbers that tie us together. Your birthday is 8/26. My mother's was 9/27. My birthday is the 13th, yours is the 26th, exactly double. I don't think that's an accident. I think it's a thread, one that runs from her to me to you, three women bound by more than blood.
For years I believed my aunt was the one connected to Paris. Now I know my grandmother spent years working and saving, hoping to send my mother there in her twenties to study as a fashion designer. And now here we are sharing an experience that she once dreamed would be.
