I am forever grateful to @dirtyfilms and @inclusionists

Two weeks ago we shot the proof of concept film for a feature called Mitzvah that I have been working on for 8 years! It’s the most personal thing I have ever written and I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish. I got to work with so many of my good friends, I feel so lucky that I have such great people in my corner.

I am in awe of my cast. Thank god @rykofilms found @eestherharrison for me 😭 and it was so fun getting to work and meet @vivianhunterr for the first time. I finally got to work with @itsdanamillican and it was such an honor to watch her. @sarahbrodywebb was the perfect rabbi! My lead Annie (who is 13) hadn’t had much exposure to film before, and she brought to life someone that had been in my head for such a long time - I will be forever thankful for her patience, trust and sass.

We shot in my childhood synagogue and the last time I was there was for my Mother’s funeral. It was emotional to come back and make a piece of art about such a specific time in my life, while also memorializing her in this.

Talking about Judaism / that I am Jewish with people has been hard the past few years and I was honestly scared to make something that revolved around a girls bat mitzvah. I hope that fear subsides and we can learn to treat jewish people with compassion and kindness, especially when so many of us in the united states also don’t equate our identity with our current government.

This film is about the power of letting people take care of you and opening yourself up to others in times of need. For me, girlfriends in high school replaced a huge hole for me, as well as my jewish community. This film is for them 💙

With a few days between us and Trash Baby’s final festival screening, I can’t stop thinking about how lucky we are that this little indie got to live such a big life on the festival circuit.

After the script was named an Academy Nicholl semi-finalist, Trash Baby went on to celebrate its world premiere at SXSW, and from there built up a festival rap sheet that was bigger and badder than we ever could have dreamed.

After taking home an Industry Choice Award, Audience Choice Award, Best Actress Award, and four Best Narrative Feature wins, getting to finish our festival run in my hometown where it all began, with three back-to-back sold-out shows at the very theater where I first fell in love with cinema as a child… Felt poetically perfect.

And as if that wasn’t enough, to walk away from our last festival with a fifth and final Best Narrative Feature win… I don’t know if I’ll ever have the words for that.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who made this experience what it was. Thank you to the cast and crew who rallied behind Trash Baby when it was still just a delusional dream, and to everyone who took a chance on a trailer park kid with no money or name that could easily have been written off as a bad bet.

Thank you to everyone who watched it, programmed it, championed it, bought a ticket, wrote a review, or cheered for us along the way. A supportive community is the only way indie films happen anymore, and we really fucking did that.

as @trashbabyfilm finishes it’s festival run in ashland at the end of this month, I figure I would drop some of my favorite photos I took as the bts/stills photographer

being on this film and observing it, I realized you can make an indie with sheer determination and grit and maybe a little insanity
