It’s Global Encryption Day! Today, along with fellow members of the Global Encryption Coalition, we’re celebrating this amazing, liberatory tool that allows us to organize, seek healthcare, and connect with others without anyone— Big Tech companies, governments, or bad actors—spying on our communications. Here are some of our favorite encrypted tools you can start using today:

✅ @signal_app for messaging + video conference calls
✅ Kagi + @duckduckgo for encrypted search engines
✅ @protonprivacy for email communiciations

As fascism rises globally, politicians are looking for any excuse to break our phones and snoop on our conversations. Here in the US, that often looks like legislative efforts to “protect kids” or “stop crime” that actually make us all less safe by weakening end-to-end encryption.

On Wednesday, October 21st the Reno City Council will consider an eight-year, $22 million contract with Axon Enterprise that would significantly expand and consolidate the police department’s cameras, drones and artificial intelligence tools under a single private vendor.
Dave Maass, director of investigations with the Electronic Frontier Foundation says “I don’t think the problem here is necessarily Flock in itself. It is the idea of using mass surveillance combined with AI to surveil the entire population.”

While Reno Police Chief Cory Solferino has said “This technology has been instrumental in helping to identify people of interest so they’re not out there committing serial robberies or serial burglaries or victimizing our community,”

The council meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reno City Hall. Public comment is encouraged.

A major win for free speech! A federal judge has rejected the government’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit challenging its surveillance of people’s social media posts based on their viewpoints.

The lawsuit, brought by UAW (@uaw.union), CWA (@cwaunion), and AFT (@aftunion), challenges a program that allegedly monitors noncitizens’ online speech and threatens their immigration status for expressing views the government doesn’t agree with.

This matters because the court recognized that the threat of immigration consequences can deter people from exercising their First Amendment rights, and that fear of surveillance can undermine workers’ ability to organize, communicate, and stand together. No one should have to choose between speaking out and fearing government retaliation.

Electronic Frontier Foundation, Muslim Advocates, and the Media Freedom & Information Access Clinic are representing the unions as the case moves forward. We’ll keep fighting for free speech, the right to organize, and no government retaliation for expressing your views.

It's important that Americans wake up and see what's going on around them. Our country is being rotted and destroyed from the inside. They kill us with chemicals, drag us into their Genocidal Wars, live off our Welfare System, poison our children's minds through the media with thoughts of transgender, homosexuality, and Anti Christian Values. But you're just an Anti-Semetic Goy that should serve 🇮🇱 as slaves and die for for them... I got no problem with anyone that is Jewish, Fuck Zionism... If not wanting to see my Culture, Religion, and Country destroyed by people who believe we are less than human makes me anti-Semitic... Then Color me fucking Goy cause I'll be damned if I let that happen.

Is there any proof of humanity left online? 🤖🚨

Digital safety is becoming a critical issue for local communities, and Uptown Voices is here to make sure we are having these essential conversations.

In this segment of the Uptown Voices podcast, Octavio Blanco talks with NYC Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa about the growing need to regulate social media bots and the spread of harmful rhetoric. As the Chair of the City Council's Tech Committee, De La Rosa is advocating for stronger federal oversight over Big Tech. She also bravely shared a vulnerable reality: online rhetoric recently escalated into a credible threat against her own safety. Support independent local news so we can continue exploring the issues that matter most to Uptown!

Searching Flock data without a warrant is unconstitutional, so we're taking legal action on behalf of @wichurches and an individual pastor.

ALPR technology like Flock or Axon scans and stores vehicle data from countless drivers every day, enabling the government to track where people drive and when — without their knowledge or consent and without a warrant. These devices collect everyone’s data, not just data on vehicles associated with a crime.

The U.S. Supreme Court has recently established that such pervasive tracking over time invades a reasonable expectation of privacy, converting otherwise public observations into an unconstitutional search.

Wisconsin’s State Constitution provides protection from unreasonable searches and therefore guards against this exact form of indiscriminate electronic dragnet. Accordingly, law enforcement’s retrospective querying of these kinds of ALPR databases without any constitutional safeguards constitutes illegal searches.

Below, a post from the ACLU of Wisconsin announces that the ACLU and Electronic Frontier Foundation filed a petition directly with the Wisconsin Supreme Court seeking to require law enforcement to obtain a judicial warrant before searching data collected by automated license plate readers.

A few weeks ago, EFF traveled to Far West Texas (aka the Trans-Pecos) to document the expanding network of surveillance deployed by Customs and Border Protection. What we found were entire communities caught in the dragnet.

I speak out against political corruption. Now my personal Instagram account, @ibrahimburakcetinkaya, has been unfairly locked, and Meta's recovery system is preventing me from accessing it.

I receive password reset codes by email, but the verification code required to log in never arrives. Despite contacting Meta repeatedly, the issue remains unresolved.

My account contains my real name and photos. I have full access to my registered email and phone number, and I'm willing to verify my identity with a government-issued ID and a video selfie.

I'm not asking Meta to bypass security. I'm asking for a working way to prove my identity and recover my own account.

I believe this is censorship and an unfair restriction on my freedom of expression.

Meta, I urgently request a human review and the restoration of access to my account.

If you believe in freedom of expression, please stand with me. Share this post and tag Meta and Instagram leadership.

A red banner highlights a personal statement explaining that Instagram account @ibrahimburakcetinkaya has been unfairly locked for approximately five days. The account owner, İbrahim Burak Çetinkaya, believes the restriction amounts to censorship following his anti-corruption advocacy. Another prominent headline reads: "NOW I'M LOCKED OUT."
