Despite being a designated rest day, on Monday the Kenya Team had action-packed and memorable experiences. After breakfast and some fun with board games (including a win at flying chess!), the team visited Hell’s Gate National Park. Piper, Ceiba, and Amyla biked 10 km through the scenic landscape, passing zebras and monkeys, before beginning a 45-minute hike with a knowledgeable Maasai guide. They explored lush gorges, saw hot springs, and even visited the mountain that inspired The Lion King.

After the hike, they shopped at a local Maasai market, where they learned that the artisans share their handmade earnings as a community. Meanwhile, Derrick and Ed enjoyed a peaceful day with their host family—sightseeing, visiting grandparents, and picking plants and oranges with the kids.

The day wrapped up with dinner preparations and excitement for tomorrow’s impactful activities: distributing mobility devices and engaging in community service.

On Saturday, the Kenya Team enjoyed a heartfelt final breakfast at the Dopoi Center in the Maasai Mara, where they expressed gratitude to the staff and exchanged emotional goodbyes. They received traditional Maasai bracelets symbolizing their welcome into the Dopoi family.

After taking farewell photos, the team departed for Naivasha. The scenic drive included a snack stop at a gas station. Upon arrival in Naivasha around 1 PM, they were warmly welcomed by Rotaract and Rotary members.

The afternoon was filled with games like Uno, Kenyan poker, and Exploding Kittens, followed by a shared meal and introductions. Host families were then assigned: Ed and Derrick together; Susan, Ceiba, and Isabelle as a group; and the narrator with Amyla. The group is excited for the week ahead.

Enta supa!
Yesterday began early at 6:00 AM with a delightful surprise—mandazis for breakfast, much to Amyla’s joy. The group then set off with guides Patrick and Peter, driving past schoolchildren on their morning walk and sharing greetings of “Supa.” Their excitement grew in anticipation of donating school supplies.

At the reserve entrance, they were warmly greeted by Maasai women selling handmade crafts. Everyone purchased something, supporting the local artisans.

The safari began with sightings of jackals and continued with an incredible array of wildlife including lions, giraffes (both regular and Maasai), cheetahs, elephants, zebras, ostriches, crocodiles, and many bird species. The group was especially moved by close encounters with lions and elephants—particularly a family of elephants, including twin calves and a majestic 70-year-old bull.

Lunch was enjoyed under a large tree with music and laughter, followed by naps and conversation with the guides. Toward evening, they observed a massive zebra migration and ended the day with a peaceful walk to a 4,000-year-old tree, where Peter shared stories of nature and a leopard’s past meal.

Back at the Dopoi Center, they joined Ole Keiwa for a community tradition called “eating the news,” where everyone shares stories and reflections from the day outdoors. The experience deepened their appreciation of Maasai culture and the profound connection between the people, animals, and land of the Mara.

Supa family and friends! Today was a beautiful and enriching day. We began at 6:15 AM with a climb up the Dopoi Center water tower to witness a stunning panoramic sunrise over the Mara. After breakfast, Meitamei taught us about the history of natural medicine in Kenya and the U.S. Ole Keiwa then led us on a nature walk, teaching us how the Maasai use local plants for medicine, food, and daily life—we even made antibacterial soap from tree branches!

Later, we sorted school supplies for Friday’s school visit and shared a cultural exchange with Ole Keiwa, introducing him to American items like stickers and bubbles. We also gave him gifts for his grandchildren. After a hearty lunch, we explored a traditional Maasai house, gaining perspective on joy through community and simplicity.

The afternoon ended with Maasai women teaching us traditional bracelet-making, singing, and dancing together. We shared songs like “Party in the USA” and “Cupid Shuffle.” After a delicious dinner and engaging conversation, we settled in excited for tomorrow’s wildlife drive.

The Kenya Team successfully completed their long journey from Phoenix to the Dopoi Center in Kenya. After an uneventful 5-hour flight to JFK, the team passed time resting and exploring the airport, including a memorable encounter with a singing hologram. A team lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings was followed by games and a 15-hour flight to Kenya, during which most of the team managed some sleep.

Upon arrival, the teens tackled baggage collection, loading 13 bags with help from Derrick’s stacking skills. Customs posed some challenges, but the team handled them well. Patrick and Lukiene met the group and helped load the bags for the scenic 4-hour journey to the Dopoi Center. Along the way, they saw a variety of wildlife and contrasting landscapes, from city scenes to rural communities.

By 9 PM Kenya time, the team arrived at the beautiful Dopoi Center, shared a dinner together, took photos, and settled in for a well-deserved rest.
