Sophia Romagnoli ‘26: Emerson House single.

What is your favorite part of your room?
Definitely my little bookshelf! It has the books I most enjoy or I was most excited to buy. I love seeing them everyday and get excited all over again. Since most are related to either economics or Middle East Studies, I also use them to get ideas for research projects or expand my knowledge of a specific area in either discipline.

What is an object that has significant meaning to you?
The sticky note on my desk that says “Trust yourself” is from a teacher in high school who was very important to me. It’s a good reminder to have right in front of me when I am working. I also love the two epidemiology posters above my desk. I have a side interest in epidemiology and public health but, unfortunately, these days I am too busy to read much about it. So the posters are a welcome connection to the field!

What are some things that make your room feel like home?
I brought a lot of the lamps and little decorations I had in my room before college which all make the room feel more familiar. But it has just taken time. This is my second year in the room and only when I moved back into the room in September did I think of it as my home.

Ryan Emerson ‘24, environmental science and policy and computer science major, president of Emerson House, and informal stylist:

“I cut my friends‘ hair all the time at Smith, but my first hair-cutting experience was in my first year of high school. I got a pixie cut as a sort of really not great-looking try for a Smith chop. I cut my hair myself after that and didn’t get my first pair of hair-cutting scissors until Christmas 2020. I told my mom I would be cutting my own bangs, and to calm her worrying that I was being rash, I told her I would wait until I had the proper supplies.

“My mom is the inspo with all the at-home haircuts. She cut the hair of the girls in the neighborhood, and we all ended up with bangs slightly angled up each time.

“I started cutting all of my family members‘ hair [during the pandemic], and when I got back to Smith, I cut quite a few friends‘ hair. I have many friends who have said, ‘If it doesn’t turn out well, I’ll just shave it all off,’ which is a great encouragement.

“I still work very carefully and gradually so that my ’clients‘ don’t regard me as someone who messes up their hair, and I’ve gotten positive feedback from all of my haircuts. I have no idea what anything is called, I just ask where they want shorter and by how much. My favorite, though, is to use clippers on anything like a taper cut (that I learned from practicing on my dad) or an undercut with fun designs.

“Because it is free and they can always come back the next day for adjustments to the cut, or to chop off another inch, my friends will never go to a hair salon while I’m around.

“My estimate of how many haircuts I’ve given is 30. I was paid for only one of them, and it was in the form of two Werther’s caramels.“

Welcome back to our series highlighting student assistants' research into their Smith houses! Today we hear from Sofia P. ‘27, who lives in Emerson house. Here’s what they found:
Emerson House, then and now!
The original photos of the Emerson house exterior, living room, and dining hall come from our Building Records collection (CA-MS-00104) and were taken around 1925 – three years after the house finished construction. The recreations were taken in October of 2023. It was so sweet to see all our bikes in the same place Smithies kept them almost 100 years ago. I was especially surprised to notice that our living room still has some of the original furniture! It’s nice to see how Emerson has always been a great place to find house community, and I appreciated getting to connect to my house’s history. Come in person to the Special Collections Reading Room or browse online to discover your own house’s rich past!
Thank you, Sofia! We ❤️ Emerson House
And, a special thank you to all of you who follow us and interact with our posts!! This will be our last post in 2023 🎉🎉 At 5 today, the Reading Room will close until January 8th. We can’t wait to be back and continue the archival fun in 2024!! Stay tuned for event news and more 😉💋 Black and white photo of the exterior of Emerson house in 1925. In Cushing and Emerson, photographer Brooke Chandler ‘25 caught the prep behind such dinner dishes as brie en croûte, grilled salmon with hollandaise and fennel, and chocolate pots de créme. For the two houses, staff prepared 160 pounds of the salmon alone.

Chef Rich Gilbert (who has been at Smith for 39 years and, fun fact, also is a magician) said, “The prep for Julia Child Day is nice—smooth and relaxing. When it comes time to serve the food, it gets crazy—a little chaotic because we’re busy. It’s definitely worth it though, the students look forward to this day.”

Delia Collins ’27, Sarah Lee ’27, and Zoë Ishmael ’27 (not pictured), Emerson triple

”We became roommates through random assignment. It worked out so well! We like so many things about our room: It’s spacious, it’s on the first floor, and we have a private bath.

”Our favorite decorations are pictures with friends (Delia), string lights (Zoë), and my first-year plant (Sarah). The favorite thing to do is to come back to our rooms after a long day and take turns debriefing funny/ interesting things that happened throughout the day.

”[Essential] room items are: weighted blanket (Delia), mini vacuum (Sarah), and a travel cup (Zoë).”
