We’re back with part 2 of our episode on ballet myth busting. We started with this one: “there’s one body type for ballet.” We asked Peter LeBreton Merz, artistic director of Eglevsky Ballet and former director of Ballet West Academy, and Racheal Nye, director of Oklahoma City Ballet’s Yvonne Chouteau School and Studio Company, whether that’s true. They also answer your questions about competitions, training in Europe, whether big donations buy better casting and whether Vaganova is the only method that works.

Can a teacher look at a 12-year-old and promise a professional career? Peter LeBreton Merz, artistic director of Eglevsky Ballet and former director of Ballet West Academy, learned a different lesson from his old teacher and boss, Daniel Simmons, who said promising 12-year-olds terrified him. If a teacher sees that kind of potential and can’t get the student to a professional career, that’s on the teacher. Peter says the job from there is to help the student fall in love with the process, and that no teacher should be handing out guarantees at 12.

Can you tell at 12 whether a dancer will make it? Racheal Nye, director of Oklahoma City Ballet’s Yvonne Chouteau School and Studio Company, says it’s easier to spot the obstacles than to pick the dancers who will succeed. Peter LeBreton Merz knows firsthand how unreliable those early calls can be. Long before he led Ballet West Academy and became artistic director of Eglevsky Ballet, he was told at 11 and 12 that ballet probably wasn’t for him.

Turn down School of American Ballet once and you’ll never get back in. Most ballet parents have heard some version of that, along with plenty of other myths. So we collected your questions and took them to Peter LeBreton Merz, artistic director of Eglevsky Ballet and former director of Ballet West Academy, as well as Racheal Nye, director of Oklahoma City Ballet’s Yvonne Chouteau School and Studio Company. We talk about whether blacklists exist, the pressure to send 10-year-olds away for the summer, get them on pointe early and move them up a level fast, and what Peter and Racheal look for in a 12-year-old. They also get into why nearly every boy is on scholarship, how much seniority counts in casting, and what a school should be able to show before it calls itself pre-professional. NEW CLASS ALERT!

So excited to be teaching Pilates @eglevskyballet every Monday night at 7:30, starting Monday 9/14.

Sign up at the link in my bio, or just walk in :)

This one hour class will take you through a Classical Pilates mat flow, using only your body weight to challenge and care for the whole body. The class follows a clear and thoughtful series of exercises, carefully ordered to progress safely through the class. The coordination of the breath with each exercise is primarily a functional tool to assist with the execution of each exercise, and also helps focus and clear the mind, allowing us to escape from any stress we may carry with us during the day.

Santina has over two years of experience teaching Pilates across varied ages and levels. Her background as a dancer allows her to give a class that reflects the anatomical structures of the body, and their most healthy and efficient ways of executing movement. Her main priority in teaching is to give students tools to tend to the long-term care of their bodies, so that they can continue to support us and carry us through all the physical demands of daily life with ease and comfort instead of injury and pain.

See you in class!
