Just finished installing a couple of Grateful Dead themed works for a man that loves the band more than anyone I know. When he suggested I do something on the side of his guest house I immediately envisioned the classic Maxell tape ad that was created in 1979. It has always been iconic to me and visualizes the way I like to experience music. The speaker is a JBL L100 model and is 25” tall. I used that info to scale everything by. I made the lampshade at @theglassspot in Richmond and carefully cut it in half. My cousin Chris at McBride sign company helped me with the layout, aluminum cutout and the vinyl image. There are four channels of dimmers to the many LEDs so it could be tuned just right. The other install at the end of the hallway is an internally lit aluminum cutout with wood veneer applied which was lightly burned for contrast to the stone wall.

What I loved about this project was working with interior designer and good friend, Kelly Brown. Her initial inspiration became an experience that encouraged trust in the design process for these custom floor lamps.

That trust made it possible to take creative risks, respond to challenges with more confidence and recognize that the best ideas most often come from shared experimentation. Always grateful for the team of artisans that I collaborate with!

Photo dump from last few days at @camocagi_theglassfurnace with @garmezyglass @neffel @egonglass @ecetanselglas first & second vid of a piece donated to the school which I secured for our own collection! It’s coming back to Ireland 🇮🇪 💪, then a few of the finished pieces, a piece of my own, endless kittens and cats 🐈 getting ‘trained’ by Erin 😋, the epic @annepetters and @laytugce doing their kiln thing, @garmezyglass tools… and ‘need to gets’ for me, the @camocagi_theglassfurnace founder, after hearing his detailed story, the river crossing with the lovely meal serving ladies coming back from picking fresh produce for us to enjoy, the awesome @ecetanselglass and her monsters 👹, the hard working cold worker who made all my pieces sweet, knocking off one of my glass heads into the hands of the gentle strong “G-loves”, the dino team holding all of the large skulls we made over the two weeks,our last night together in #ıstanbul enjoying the Turkish offerings, @egonglass outside his namesake restaurant, and drinks outside a quiet alley bar. Feeling full and full of gratitude for good new friends, this lovely Turkish culture and the memories

Day off after five full days of making dino skulls with @garmezyglass, @egonglass, @ecetanselglass @neffel and our #glassfurnaceistanbul pal @annepetters . First stop at the Turkish barber where is was caught getting a very painful ear wax! Great day of exploring and enjoying the antics along the way. Spice market and our stellar tour guide Ece 🤙🏼 now On the ferry back to Asia Istanbul… great day out. Fun evening ahead!

Sometimes my creative thoughts come from past design iterations. Ideas that didn’t get the chance to evolve, not because they weren’t good enough, but because we chose a different direction.

This five-arm brass chandelier paired with frosted hand blown glass shades, is one of those ideas. It’s part of a series I want to continue exploring.

I think of each piece in this series similar to family members. We share certain traits, maybe similar gestures, but we’re not identical.

Listening to the sounds of making can be an overlooked experience. How we listen can offer unexpected creative inspiration. There is comfort in the hum of machinery, metal being forged and welded, wood being shaped, drilled, and sanded and glass being blown, where the repetition of practiced hands are bringing ideas into form. These are some of the sounds behind the custom light fixtures we create. I invite you to close your eyes and listen.
