A love story overlooking the Nile 🇪🇬

High above the western bank of the Nile in Aswan stands one of Egypt’s lesser-known monuments ➡️ the Aga Khan Mausoleum.

A few fascinating facts about this beautiful place:

▪️ Built in the late 1950s, the mausoleum is the final resting place of Aga Khan III (1877 - 1957), the 48th spiritual leader of the Nizari Ismaili Muslims.

▪️ Inspired by Fatimid architecture, it features pink limestone and a tomb made of white Carrara marble.

▪️ Aga Khan III loved spending winters in Aswan and wished to be buried here.

▪️ His wife, Begum Om Habibeh Aga Khan, began a touching tradition of placing a fresh red rose on his tomb every day, which continued after her death in 2000.

▪️ Closed to the public since 1997, the mausoleum can still be admired from the Nile.
