50 Ways to Die in the Ocean (Eileen O’Hely, illustrated by Nico O’Sullivan, Hawkeye Publishing)

Eileen O’Hely and Nico O’Sullivan’s graphic novel 50 Ways to Die in the Ocean is a saltwater standalone sequel to 50 Ways to Die in Space.

The story follows two animated protagonists who offer their contrasting perspectives on what begins as safe, everyday activities in and around the sea. A smaller, optimistic beachgoer is paired perfectly with a taller, factual and somewhat pessimistic ocean expert. Their differing personalities are brought to life through simple but effective black-and-white illustrations and speech bubbles.

The beachgoer’s perfectly reasonable, if somewhat naive, questions are met with well-researched and cleverly worded explanations from the expert. While some of the possible outcomes of being in the ocean are truly frightening, each is grounded in scientific evidence and presented in clear, everyday language.

The book explores both the obvious and hidden dangers of the ocean with humour and authority. It moves swiftly from familiar hazards, such as swallowing seawater and incorrectly applying sunscreen, to more serious and scientifically complex issues, including claustrophobia in submarines, dealing with decompression sickness and surviving tsunamis.

The combination of education and entertainment succeeds in this enlightening read. Student curiosity may be piqued by investigations into issues such as the environmental impact of bycatch from fishing trawlers and the dangers of plastic bags to the world’s turtle population.

Upper primary and lower secondary readers who enjoy nonfiction, marine life and discovering facts will find this a fascinating and memorable read. Ideal for readers aged 11 and above.

🪼Educational and entertaining!

#50waystodieintheocean by #eileenohely is out with @hawkeyepublishing TODAY and it’s fabulously fun and informative!

With top Illustrations by Nico O’Sullivan this #middlegrade graphic novel is the second instalment in the ’50 Ways’ series, perfect for curious kids and interested parents. 😆 But do not read this book, unless you want to laugh!
🌊
The ocean. Deep. Wet. And decidedly dangerous.

Two thirds of our planet is covered in water, but is it really safe to swim in it, float on it, or even look at it?

From sharks to stonefish, tsunamis to submarines, learn about what really lies beneath the waves, and why you should rethink your next beach holiday!
🌊
I loved the blue and yellow characters banter in this one, particularly how yellow pushes back and questions blue, who’s maybe a bit over-the-top!🤣

Eileen O’Hely is an award-winning author, science communicator and astrophysicist who brings facts to the page in a fun Q&A format, inspiring children to respect, care for, and explore some of the strangest and most surprising secrets of the ocean.
💙
And if you would like to know more, I’ll be interviewing Eileen next month!

What a joyful Brisbane launch! 🚀

@sarahtodmanwrites was a consummate host, shining her light on me and my story, homing in on special parts of THE TIME AFTER NOW that don’t always get a mention.

The @hawkeyepublishing fam represented with their trademark fierce and loyal support. Karen, Michael and Bianca at @booksstones were so welcoming and wonderful, slinging books and bringing gorgeous energy.

So special to finally meet some lovely friends in real life: @lbe.hackney, @laura_morris_writer, @enigma7878 and Imogen!

Special mentions for @john_carlyle7 who I met on a plane to Brisbane almost two years ago and just flat out refused to leave his life. And to @nomadshell for surprising me all the way from Melbourne!

Thank you to everyone who came along and especially to my precious little family, sitting in the front row beaming.

What a bonus to be able to celebrate the launch of my friend @peterlong.author’s third historical fiction novel, WOODEN SHIPS AND IRON MEN, at @booksstones whilst here in Brisbane!

The Hawkeye fam was out in force, showing its support for one of our most beloved members.

This book was inspired by Peter’s father’s contribution to the allied forces in WWII in a little known group known as the coast watchers who dared to breach enemy lines in order to gather intelligence. Jo Skinner led a deep conversation into the real story behind the fictionalised account and I can’t wait to journey through the pages.

Next up on the Books@Stones lineup is… me. It’s me, this Thursday night. Grab a free ticket via the Events link in my bio.

🌳📚 Thank you for having me at your debut festival, @pagesintheparksamford ! A lovely celebration of books and stories. It was a bit Amazing Race there at the start as @meredithdownesauthor
and I were battling against the clock and rain to set up our stall tent! But what a promising turnout despite the wet weather. And look at that beautiful Pages in the Park font on blue background - part of the cover of giant books made for it!
