I put my mate Connor through the exact session I’d do every Wednesday before a match day, what we call matchday minus three. And I have partial paralysis in my calf, hamstring and glute and can’t run for more than a couple of mins. I done a small warm up and a demo of what to do for 1 rep. He’s a fit enough bloke… and it absolutely humbled him 😅 People don’t realise what match officials actually train like week to week. This is just him afterwards, the full session is coming soon. Respect for taking it on, Connor 🤝 #refereefitness #football #matchofficial #premierleague #danrobathan

I thought I was fit..... During filming a few weeks ago Dan took me through an example session he would do to ensure he could stay at the peak of his performance during his time as an assistant referee. Naturally I thought this would be fine, during my time within sport I had ran many high intensity sessions. Nothing like this though! The intensity and volume really got a hold of me and safe to say which one of us struggled and which one got the best camera shots..... Hats off to all match officials out there that are putting in these hard yards weekly. Genuine athletes. #referee #founder #sportstech #athlete #refrech

Some would say I have a face for radio! Yesterday myself and @danrobathan got in front of the camera to film all things @eip_referee. We went from what it is like to actually referee in the @premierleague to running in the rain. Thank you to @thenestcsf for their hospitality and access to their top class facilities and also @alexwaters.media for making the long journey from the North East. Coming to a screen near you…

Work I marked as a teacher got checked by a second marker before the student saw it. Sometimes a third. One goal: give this person something they can actually use next time. A referee carries a version of the same weight a student does. You perform in public, on a given day, and if it goes wrong someone’s upset with you. The difference is what comes after. A student’s feedback has three sets of eyes on it. Most referees I speak to get one voice, days later, sometimes the day before the next game. That’s the bit I’ve been trying to fix with @eip_referee less time tagging. More time collaborating with your peers and your coach working out why.

I run two startups. One is @eip_referee The other doesn't have a name. He's just started asking for a referee's book and cards for his birthday, because he's watched me build mine for long enough to want in. That's the part nobody tells you about being a founder and a parent. The best thing about it? We share the same love of sport, and it's something we bond over every single day. He's taken a real interest in my work, not because I've pushed it on him, but because he's watched it happen around him the majority of his life. The hard part? Most founder content isn't written for people like me. While other founders are at their desks by 6am, I'm getting my son ready for school and doing the run. At 7pm, when some are still closing out their day, I'm doing bath time and bedtime. That doesn't mean the work isn't happening. It means it happens in the gaps, early mornings before he wakes, late nights after he's asleep. My laptop comes everywhere with me. It's in my bag in this photo, because it always is. And in between, there's a guilt that never really switches off. Work on the business, and you feel it for the time you're not with him. Spend the evening with him, and you feel it for the hour you didn't put into EIP. The truth is, I'll work harder than most people ever will, not despite being a dad, but because of it. I have to make EIP work. And I have to make sure that, years from now, my son never once looks at me like I was a stranger who happened to live in his house. Both startups are non-negotiable. Neither one gets to fail. #Founder #FounderLife #Startup

9 months ago I was a teacher and a lecturer in sports science. Teaching sounds like it’s about explaining. It isn’t. It’s about simplifying information, and it’s about feedback. You can deliver the perfect lesson and it means nothing until you see what the learner does next, tell them where to improve, and watch them do it better. Years of that taught me three things. One voice is rarely enough. Feedback is useless if it isn’t understood. And it has to arrive while it still matters. Then I looked at how analysis actually works in sport, and saw the opposite. Tagging a single match by hand takes around two and a half hours. Not everyone gets the same level of analysis. Feedback sits in silos, takes days to arrange, and often lands like a no-reply email. It tells you something, but you can’t ask multiple sources. So I sat in my spare room scribbling flow charts. Slash the tagging time. Put peers and coaches in the same feedback group. Clips and words in one place, while it still matters. I floated it to a few people working in refereeing. The response was overwhelming. One problem. I’m not a referee. To build something credible for officials, I needed someone the refereeing world would actually trust. That’s how I met @danrobathan . A short call first, then a few weeks later I got in the car and drove to meet him properly. His verdict was that this would genuinely enhance how officials are developed. We’ve been refining it together ever since. For the top of the game, and for everyone further down the pyramid, because we think one platform can connect the whole thing. Since then: conversations I’d never have imagined nine months ago, partners I’m proud of, and we are close. I’ve promised myself I’ll document this journey properly. Follow along or don’t. Just know that if you’ve got an idea sitting in a notebook somewhere, things can move faster than you think. You just have to start.
