Oh my gosh! So not too long ago @coffeeandcreativeplanners asked me for my favorite #cookierecipe. Easy enough. Sent! Tonight I found out why.

Every year @natashaplansandstuff sends the most thoughtful gifts to all the @tula_xii leaders. This year, she took each of the Leader’s favorite recipes and not only made us a 1 (or 22) of a kind recipe cookbook, but she actually baked every single one of our recipes! 😮 Seriously… Who does that?! I have to say knowing how much it touched the leaders was everything. I love this tribe! So blessed 🥹

Crowns. 👑

You probably refer to them as “church hats.” But in African American culture, these aren’t just “hats” — they’re crowns.

These hats became popular after slavery. Black women wanted to look their best when worshiping and these hats were considered a way to honor God. They became known as a woman’s crown; they symbolized her triumph over hardship.

My mom, a constant overcomer, wore her crown to church often. Head always held high, no matter the battle she faced (and she faced many).

And that’s why a week ago yesterday, I wore this crown—in honor of my mother and our culture, but also to remind myself I can get through the hardship of unexpected loss.

On Friday, April 1, close to 700 people came to honor, weep, and celebrate the life of my EXTRAordinary mother. 🤍

👑 “No one loved me as well as her.”
👑 “She always made time to listen to me and when she did I felt like I was the only person in the room.”
👑 “I wouldn’t have the career I do today if it wasn’t for your mother.”
👑 “I’m the person I am today bc of your mother’s guidance and patient love.”

Sentiments like these were repeatedly expressed to my siblings and I by students, friends, colleagues, and many others close to my mom. It didn’t matter your relationship to her. If you were in her path, she saw you. She loved you.

Regal in all she did, this woman I get to call mother was more than a queen. But in our limited English language, it seems queen is the best I can do.

My mom was walking strength, love, and dignity. So it’s no small wonder she always wore a crown. 👑

And while she dons a greater crown in Heaven now, I’ll forever cherish this temporary crown. This “church hat.” 👒

Mom, I know you would’ve loved this crown and that brings me deep joy and peace. I’ll always wear it for you and I’ll continue to overcome—just like you 🤍
