When teaching or attempting to apply techniques without first developing core positional value (strategic efficiency), situations like this become inevitable. An over fixation on flashy techniques / submissions is like focusing on buying fruit rather than planting and cultivating a tree that can consistently bear fruit. Story time: Over the last 10 years I’ve completely reframed my perspective on readiness for combat or conflict. Sport/ street/BJJ/MMA, studying and testing historical and new concepts of preparation across many styles. Helping students - one-on-one mainly has been game changing. There is no one “roll” or training session /fight or conflict that will be exactly the same, or has been for me ever. So how should we teach someone for that variation? By having them memorize thousands of specific details?? The end goal is physiology and psychology coping with stress and responding progressively with more efficiency toward a goal/survival. I find, the more you need to teach someone (technique/step by step etc)the more specific you are getting (sport/pretend fighting etc.), the less autonomy they have and the less adaptability they will posses. With all the online training and dojo curriculums that exists today you can get lost for decades thinking you are learning “BJJ” but in fact missing your own ability to more valuable progression against any potential oncoming force/opponent. The older generations didn’t have a Rolodex of techniques as much as they were creatively responsive ninjas that operated without hesitation and off deeper instinct for progression. Many OG’s/good fishermen are just selling fish these days (i.e. online libraries or in the dojo with five hundred/thousand move curriculums) because it’s good business and keeps people engaged—maybe. But that’s not how they came up. Many people confuse my approach with the somewhat popular ECO movement, to me the eco movement shares some similarities in training modalities at times, like for the purpose of driving early autonomy, but of everything I’ve seen on eco they don’t know or have a deeper formula/ context for efficient progression. Which is fine, there’s still a lot there. I have done Jiu-Jitsu my whole life and am just now seeing core concepts of efficiency and how to better explain them. From my experience this has been the thing I haven’t seen explained well anywhere. But don’t take my word for it, come visit our pop-up in Franklin, TN and experience it for yourself. 😤🏄🏽‍♂️🥷

Our first DIGITAL PRIVATE session is a wrap and a major success! My long time friend and one of the most solid black belts I know @stefankocev (Rickson/Kron BB) wanted to do a digital private from LA with his partner @amodernsavage (Jeff). It worked out as good as I expected! Special thanks to my partner @greglutze who showed up short notice to help make it happen.
