KITCHARI: Just so you know I would never ever abstain from anything, in fact I don’t think I ever have, so I’m sorry if I sound smug but completing an Ayruvedic cleanse really was a feat for me & did magic things to my body. See my experience on stories.

I’ll be taking kitchari with me into real life. It’s what we ate for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the deep dive centre of the cleanse. Not only was it delicious, it’s the simplest thing to digest (helping clear your gut & giving it a holiday). It’s utterly wholesome and is all you need on a plate as mung beans are high in protein. A Kitchari cleanse is a bit like school uniform; you’re not going to wear it all the time but just for 5days it takes the pressure off choosing an outfit, freeing up thoughts about (probable) more important things.

So now at least once a week I’ll be making a vat of kitchari to make it a kitchari-do-dah day. 🙏 to our Ayurvedic goddess @lillianjacobswellness who guided us through the cleanse, @centerforyogala for hosting with such a lovely bunch of cleansing coconuts & @missjudygreer for the loan of her zipadedodah ref

1 cup orangic white basmati rice
1/2 cup split mung beans
2tbsp ghee
1/2 tsp each of cumin seeds, ground coriander, yellow mustard seeds & turmeric
5cm grated ginger
1tsp salt (ideally pink)
1.5litres filtered water or homemade bone broth (not stock via stock cube if cleansing)
Lemon wedges, fresh coriander & *coriander (cilantro) coconut chutney, to serve

Soak the rice and mung beans overnight (don’t skip this, it’s important to help it cook down & be easiest to digest). In a large pot heat the ghee, add the spices for 2min until smelling frangrant. Add ginger then drained rice & mung beans. Stir for 1min. Add filtered water or broth. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer, cover & cook for 40mins until tender. Add longer cooking veg like sweet potatoes halfway or leafy greens like kale at the end to wilt. Serve with the lemon, coriander & chutney.

*For the quick chutney, whizz a bunch of coriander, 3tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut, a thumb-sized piece of chopped ginger, juice 1 lemon & 1/4 tsp salt (ideally pink) in a blender.

1) Lie down on your back
2) Bend both knees and place feet firmly on the earth ~ as you breathe into the lower belly/lower back feel your spine elongate and firm into the earth with spine & 👣
3) Take your yoga strap (or scarf…or tie…) and wrap the strap around the sole of your right foot
4) INHALE while extending your left leg long to the front edge of the mat while you commit your left foot in a flex. Feel your PRANA shooting out the sole of your left foot.
5)Place both straps in your right hand
6) Allow your right leg to controlled- fall ( so allow gravity to help you open the right leg over to the right but allow for a resistance in the movement) …. keep your right foot in an energetic flex
7) Press the left side of your body to the earth… if the left side-body becomes ungrounded cease the movement of the right leg, hold, and re-gorund the left.
