Adelaide I am flying in next Monday. But instead of visiting the wonderful Adelaide Markets (which I discovered during my recent tour of Grease the Musical), I decided to reach out to teaching establishments to see if I could visit and offer a free performance masterclass.

So after landing on Monday morning, I’ll meet Jo Carson, Artistic Director of Full Circle, South Australia’s first independent musical theatre company. There I will spend some time with the company before heading to the Elder Conservatorium of Music and Performing Arts School to meet Erin James, Director and Head of Music Theatre. There, I’ll spend three and a half hours with her first-year students, covering stage, screen, live performance and the time in between.

That evening, I’ll visit the wonderful Pelican Productions founders, Jen Frith and Kylie, at The Nest Studios in Lower Mitcham to work with their youth theatre group. Established 20 years ago and still going strong. It also seems fitting to be visiting this group to finish with, having spent last weekend here in Sydney with our very own Shopfront Youth Theatre, fundraising during their 50-hour ACATHON and celebrating 50 years of the company’s existence. At the end of the marathon 50 hours the company managed to raise $68,050. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Some of you may ask, “Why do I do this? Am I trying to get into heaven?”
Actually, the reason is pretty simple. When I was at school in South Auckland, a Mercury Theatre touring group came through and put on a show. In that group, I saw a Polynesian actor for the first time. I didn’t realise this was a thing.
That actor was Maiava Nathaniel Lees, a highly acclaimed actor, writer and director, who has been instrumental in developing contemporary Pacific theatre in Aotearoa, New Zealand. He became my mentor and my dear friend.
This is why I do this. To effect meaningful change, you have to “be in the room where it happens!” @elderconservatorium @erinejames @pelicanproductions @fullcircle_theatre @shopfront_arts @atyp_theatre @morrisseymanagement @erin_keneally
