I’m many days late, but I wanted to acknowledge some of the fantastic running that happened in the 1500m heats and final at the USATF Outdoor Championships. Nikki Hiltz won a dramatic battle with Addy Wiley and Emily Mackay, and only 0.06 seconds separated the top three runners.

A number of runners ran big personal bests to make the final, including Wisconsin’s Kylie Finger (photo 1), who started the season as a 4:18 1500m runner and ran 4:05.78 in the prelims. Teagan Schein-Becker of the Brooks Beasts ran 4:04.91 and took nearly two seconds off of her personal best. Carlee Hansen, who just signed with the Swoosh TC, ran 4:04.92 and skipped over the 4:05s altogether. Taryn Parks of the Golden Peaks Track Club also PRed (4:05.14), and Jessica Kain, who started the season with a personal best of 4:12, lowered her PR to 4:06.21, before going on to finish sixth in the final.

In the final, Rachel McArthur earned her highest finish in a national championship on the track, taking fourth. And 19-year-old Claire Stegall, a rising sophomore at the University of Florida, used a strong kick to go from 11th to fifth on the final lap.

All photos by @dvgregori, and I ran out of tags.

Day 1 of USA's

The first day of any new to me stadium/location is full a lot of looking and wandering around (probably looking like I'm lost) and asking myself (and hopefully answering) a lot of questions:

Where is the light? What does it do at different times and in different places?

What is going to be behind the athletes (or fans or coaches or family) at different times and how will that look?

What is the vibe and how does it show up?

What is the flow of an event - where will we see fan or family interactions post race?

Where do I see the most photographers? Obviously that means those shots are great, and also where do I see no photographers? What are we missing?

What do I know about this race or these athletes - is their partner here? Is this a comeback story?

What is the feeling? What's happening in the eyes, in the hands, in the shoulders? Where can that feeling best be captured?

We'll see how many of these questions I can answer over the next four days!
