Read Emma E. Shooshan's (@emmashooshan) piece, "a sinister hour", or listen to a reading now on our website.

Notes from the author:
𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳 engages poetry as autoethnographic collage. Throughout 2018 I wrote a series of short pieces in conversation with the memory of an ancestor-- my paternal great-grandfather's first wife, Paris Shooshanian. She had fled the burning of her village in Armenia during the 1915 genocide, only to then die from a kitchen fire in Worcester MA. My great-grandfather later remarried, allowing my great-grandmother passage to America as his bride. For this reason Paris is revered as a Martyr by my family. I approached the process of writing as if from inside her grave, embodying what remains. At the end of the year, I synthesized my collection of writings into one cohesive piece-- as if I were assembling a collage.

The title and subtitles are inspired by lyrics translated from Russian love song “Очи чёрные” or “Ochi Chernye” meaning “Dark Eyes.” In my writing, I often imagined Paris as a figure much like the formidable object of desire being spoken to in “Ochi Chernye.”
