Message from The Artist:
“I am NuuChahNulth from Hesquiaht First Nation and Cree from Saddle lake Alberta. I am a female carver, weaver, artist and have been for over 45 years. Much of my designs and creative pursuits are encouraged and fueled by the natural surroundings of Vancouver Island.

I enjoy clean and simple lines inspired by the natural world. Over time the natural land has shifted far from what we once knew as a result of habitation, and I find great healing and inspiration in looking at and examining truth in the light and through my images. In much of the painful realities of modern Indigenous living, I find great comfort and healing in calling upon my ancestors to join us here through the art that comes from my hands.

Thank you for journeying with me as we decolonize in real time while studying and exploring the art of WakiTuuSiis.”

Stay tuned for information on ƛułʔats łim̓aqsti : Good Medicine Open Carving Sessions with WakiTuuSiis in October and November!

We extend our gratitude to Kyra Royo Fay, @eletrik_algae, our guest curator for this exhibition.

We have been in the backgrounds preparing for something really exciting! We are so excited to formally share about our approach to facilitation, culturally centered community work, and give tangible information around what we mean when we say art as tool. This fellowship is PAID ($500) to do work with community facilitation with the communities that fellows are connected to.

Hi fellow animals, anata laylay here🕺

Back in March, we hosted two of our Exquisite Pressure groups at What Lab! The weekend was a chance for the artists to showcase new work and get feedback from attendees. The artists, Sarah Nash Wong and Alyssa Amarshi, and Noelle Lee, George Zheng Berking, and Kyra Royo Fay shared their works with their heart on their sleeves, led by the relationships they have to each other, the land, and our non-human kin. I can’t wait to see how everyone’s pieces continue to develop and grow.🌿

Big thank you to Jarin & What Lab for hosting us and the artists: Sarah Nash Wong, Alyssa Amarshi, Noelle Lee, George Zheng Berking, Kyra Royo Fay, and Sarah Finn for sharing your art and processes with us.

Image Descriptions:
Slide 1: Noelle, Kyra, & George in the middle of their performance. There is a blue and red light on them, Noelle has the salmon leather wings and Kyra and George are huddled together, attached by string.
Slide 2: Alyssa hugging an audience member
Slide 3: Noelle on the ground with the salmon leather wings
Slide 4: Alyssa hugging their leg as Nash reads out a score over the phone
Slide 5: Noelle, George, & Kyra attached to a arbutus branch mobile, a spotlight is on Noelle
Slide 6: A wideshot of the audience watching Alyssa & listening to Nash
Slide 7: In the middle of their performance with George and Kyra back to back and Noelle moving away from them

Slide 12: Lichen, rock, and a collage poem on the window sill that says, “Only the passing of silence / cracks open / the smallest spaces unseen / reveal visions reflected / in the cracks + crevasses / all of a sudden things go slow / its meant to be”

You can take the community out of Nova, but can’t take Nova out of the community! For the warmer months, our creative community nights will be OUTSIDE, in different places around the city. We don’t want to make art inside a room, so why would we ask you to? See all the detail/registration on our website (link in bio).

For our final ExP x @theonlyanimaltheatre artist, say hello to Noelle, Kyra, and George! They're sharing their new work:

wings in the breath, rope in the spine

Featuring:
Noelle Lee- Creator/performer @noael_ly
George Berking- Creator/performer @geo.gram
Kyra Fay- Creator/performer @eletrik_algae
Sophie Dow- Sound Design @agrimony.arts
Ricardo Hardy- Outside Eye @rchrdy

Featuring a three-tiered arbutus mobile and set of hand-made, naturally tanned, fish leather wings, three bodies are guided through shared tension, tracing between land and body, past and future, and individuality & shared becoming. Forming temporary architectures of care and strain, balance depends on attention and collective sensing. What is inherited from our ancestors is embodied with memory, choice, and knowledge of its possible impacts– a process sensitive, alive, and wider than a single body.

Hi fellow animals, anata laylay here✨

Happy Spring! Our Exquisite Pressure performances are coming up this Friday and Saturday (March 27 and 28) at What Lab. Here is a video invitation from Kyra Royo Fay🌱

ExP is a WL series for performing artists to share new works-in-progress in front of an audience. Each ExP is hosted by a different company or collective, shaping each event with their own flavours and spices and curiosities.

The Only Animal is hosting an eco-arts edition of What Lab’s Exquisite Pressure Residency. We asked 3 artist groups to:
-explore a novel creation process reflecting ‘eco-centric’ values or concepts
-initiate a process or relationship that could have a life beyond the show

We are so excited for you to see the pieces these artists have created.

When: Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28
Time: 7:30PM
Where: What Lab, 1814 Pandora Street, Vancouver
Tickets: $17, no one turned away for lack of funds
Tickets available at the link in our bio.
