Everybody wants to say they’ve got the best coach or the best gym. Truth is, combat sports don’t work like that.

A coach can be elite for one fighter and completely wrong for another. Styles, personalities, communication, mentality, timing… it all has to gel. The right fighter with the right coach at the right time — that’s where magic happens.

And gyms? A gym can build an amazing environment, but sometimes you also need a special talent to walk through the door. No gym manufactures world champions out of thin air. There’s always a mix of hard work, chemistry, timing, sacrifice and a bit of luck involved.

If you genuinely believe you’ve got the perfect formula and you’re “the best coach in the world”, your ego is probably bigger than your understanding of the sport.

I know I’m a good coach. I know I can take fighters to an elite level with my style, methods and experience. But I’m under no illusion that I’ve cracked some secret nobody else knows. Nobody has.

The day you think you know everything in this game is usually the day you stop growing.
