In my first week as a Resident Director, I asked my student leaders, “What does success look like in their roles?”

One answer stuck: “Jarel doesn’t quit” 😂

Happy to say… I didn’t quit ha. But I learned quickly that success as an RD isn’t simply about surviving, but about the people in it.

I recently asked ChatGPT to describe being an RD in the most chaotic and fun way possible:

A Resident Director is sprinting through chaos with a coffee in one hand and an on-call phone in the other—breaking up roommate drama, answering 47 texts, calming a crisis at 2 AM, enforcing policies, fixing something that definitely isn’t in their job description, and somehow still building a community that feels like home.

And while that’s not wrong… it’s incomplete.

Because what makes this role meaningful are the students.

It’s the quiet conversations no one sees. The trust that gets built over time. The community formed in unlikely places.

You realize pretty quickly you’re not just managing a building, but you’re being invited into people’s lives during one of the most formative seasons of their lives. What a privilege that is.

Though it’s bittersweet to close this chapter, I’m so grateful for every student I had the chance to know and walk alongside.

And if you’re a student reading this… I’m rooting for you, and I have so much hope for your future.

Your RD,
Jarel
