L’idea è esattamente opposta: ciascuna comunità interroga il proprio territorio e affida all’altra domande, esperienze e produzioni artistiche.

“Alegoristi i mbahet fort rrënojës”

While the video shows several beaches being continuously reproduced and artificially maintained throughout the winter, sand becomes the thread running through the project: a material and a surface through which to observe the economies that shape the coastal territory and continuously redefine its natural and infrastructural boundaries, but also a paradox. Where does this earth come from? What forms of territory emerge when matter is understood as something that is constantly moved, accumulated, and redistributed? The contemporary terrain appears as something cyclical, destined to present itself in an idyllic form, as a seemingly untouched landscape that is artificially produced. All that remains for us is the allegory. “The allegorist holds tightly to the rubble.”

"The way in which we read the very idea of the contemporary ruin seems to have changed, as it does not necessarily possess the emblematic evidence of the traditional one. It can take multiple forms and emerge through different levels of meaning. It can be a place of memory, a beach, a marsh, a landscape that has lost its recognisability. It can even coincide with a form of knowledge: with stories that have lost the conditions of their transmission, with texts that can no longer be translated, with an analytical study of the production and movement of sand, a map, a classification, an infrastructural project. It manifests itself when something seems to have become blurred in collective memory and continues to exist only as a trace, no longer able to be restored as an experience in its entirety"

“ARTiLERIA Sazan” by Elian Stefa

“ARTiLERIA Sazan” is an ongoing territorial research laboratory through contemporary art, initiated in 2019 and focused on the island of Sazan and the wider landscape of the Bay of Vlora. At Vila 31 x Art Explora, the project takes the form of a working archive, bringing together photographs, maps, documents, publications, field notes, artworks and materials gathered over the years. Rather than presenting a complete history of the island, the studio makes visible a research process that is still unfolding.

Sazan emerges as a territory in transformation: an island marked by military infrastructure, ruins and restricted histories, now increasingly reshaped through tourism, investment and development. These overlapping narratives raise questions around memory, access, ownership, ecology and the right to imagine a territory’s future.

ARTiLERIA Sazan asks how art can produce knowledge about a territory and shape the ways it is remembered, represented and transformed.

100 days of protest by the Eastern Mediterranean 🦩🇦🇱

As @abi_shehu said, protest can be an antidepressant for a people for whom institutions have rarely worked the way they promised they would.

More than 1.2 million Albanians live abroad — a number equivalent to over 44% of the population living inside the country. One of the largest diasporas on earth relative to the population at home. And unlike so many countries marked by displacement on this scale, Albania has not lived through an official war in recent decades.

But there are other kinds of wars.

There is a class war when wages and rents begin to belong to different economies. When the coast becomes an asset class, the village an investment opportunity, and leaving home becomes one of the country’s most reliable economic infrastructures. When those who leave finance those who remain, while a small number of those who remain build a country increasingly difficult for the ordinary to afford.

And still, people stay. People return. People organise, argue, dance, pray, build, make art, make families, make impossible lives possible. Protest, too, is a form of attachment. You don’t fight for a place you have stopped imagining otherwise. ♥️♥️♥️

Maybe that is what I love most about Albania: its refusal to resolve into either romance or despair.

And I love its blues.🧿🧿🧿

Every time I pray, somewhere behind my closed eyes is the blue of the bay of Vlorë, looking towards Sazan. It contains almost every version of myself: childhood summers, departures, returns, people who disappeared, people who stayed, and sadnesses I once thought the sea might wash away 🦩🦩🦩
