This was a super fun little whimsical collaboration I did with the talented Elias Miller. He does wonder art and animations.
The Prompt was “Cute Ghost” 👻
It’s always so exiting to see what the other artist comes up with.
Elias painted a super cute ghost fishing.
I painted a raccoon and a ghost chilling in a diner.

Come out in honor of Edson Thevenin.
Tomorrow marks 10 years since Troy police stole his life.

As his mother says, Edson was not judged by the content of his character, but by the color of his skin.

In the same year as Empire’s 250th anniversary, we remember that this country was built on stolen land, stolen labor, and racial violence. Police have never been what keeps us safe.

We gather in grief, rage, remembrance, and love.
Never forget. Never again. We keep us safe.

Full video on our YouTube. 🤎 A collaboration with @troy4blacklives & @eliasmillerart

What are Gut Feelings? The brain and the gut work together to experience emotion…. and rhythm helps! For the first time EVER I’m including a lesson on the gut-brain connection in my Music & The Brain class at @georgetownuniversity, and I’m psyched!!
We are learning about how and why the brain and gut communicate, and what the role of music is in modulating those connections. I’m sharing a sneak peek of my new @rhythmgrowsyourbrain music project on the science of emotion, so they can HEAR how music is composed to engage these neural circuits.

Understanding ALL of that—the science and the art—helps us choose tools and techniques to help us process our big feelings, and find calm after the storm. These lessons are heavy on the anatomy AND the real-life applications. I love seeing my students light up when they talk about how it all applies to their lives as students, as musicians or music lovers, and as future professionals. This is FUN!

Over the past year, we stepped back from social media and turned our attention inward and toward the work itself. We made the choice to pause our marketing and political education on social media to support movement organizations, leaders, and communities through a moment that asked for depth, care, and presence more than commentary.

This project came out of that season.

In the spring of 2025, we worked with digital strategist Andy Newman and animation artist @eliasmillerart to create something simple and steady. Not a reaction to the moment, but a way to be responsive and present in the face of so much anxiety and political stress.

The full animation on our YouTube follows Rowan, seated by a window. Reading. Writing. Pausing. Returning. The movement is quiet and looping, set to lo fi music, offering a gentle rhythm for breathing, focusing, and continuing.

This piece is offered with care for Black and Brown people, LGBTQIA+ folks, and working class communities navigating uncertain times on their own terms.

MMG Earth is a global research and change management firm. We design social, technological, and environmental solutions for the betterment of people, culture, and society.

You can return to this whenever you need.

Watch A Practice of Staying at the link in our bio and let us know in the comments on YouTube what you notice about the video and Rowan’s writing place.

My work these days… writing and recording original music, giving conference talks on music and the brain, and developing new workshops and educational materials on the science of emotion. People are often surprised when they hear about my multifaceted work as a cognitive neuroscience researcher, speaker, Professor, musician, consultant and artistic creator. Finding the way to create my own job and do exactly the work I want to do has not been simple, but it is the only way for me. I am grateful to my close collaborators who are a part of this journey, and especially part of my new music project on the science of music and emotion for @rhythmgrowsyourbrain! I can’t wait to share more on that soon 😍

The Finding Rhythm Project is growing! We are on stage, in classrooms, in professional trainings and more… and this year, we are moving gently into healing spaces. You will see us working with patients in hospitals, with elders in dementia and nursing care, with special needs communities and so much more. We are so grateful for YOU—because without you we wouldn’t be here today. Here is to an amazing 2025, full of rhythm for brain growth, healing and communal bonding!

I’m honored to be featured for my scientific research, my music project and my community work, for the renowned @chinaglobaltvnetwork hour-long show Full Frame, which aired on Saturday in 100 countries! In this episode the impeccable @mikewaltercgtn features my work alongside the trailblazing work of surgeon, researcher and musician @chlimb, who has been an inspiration to me since I first heard him speak at a small music neuroscience conference about 20 years ago! If you’re ready for a deep dive into music, the brain and healing, this feature manages to go deep without losing sight of the big questions, namely, why does music have the power to promote brain development and healing… and how does it happen? Watch the episode at the link in bio… I’d love to know what you think!

Thank you to the whole production team at #FullFrame for the extensive preparation, careful editing and attention to detail. What an amazing team, and what a pleasure to be interviewed by them and to share some of my biggest hopes and dreams with them! Huge thanks and appreciation to the entire artistic team of @rhythmgrowsyourbrain, my advocacy colleagues, and all of the incredible organizations in the arts, education and healthcare that I have gotten to work with over the past decade… I hope you see yourselves in this episode, either literally or in spirit! ✨
