Painted Living Garments opens next weekend! Last December, @joanmurrayknitware organised a special collaboration with @eliotsmithdance group. Eliot expertly choreographed a routine with skilled dancers @yamit_salazar and @_oliviakirk in Joan's designs, while I sketched and painted throughout the day. This all took place at Craven College where students were able to learn about the clothing, dance, and the collaboration of the arts. It was all superbly captured by photographer @jodenison.

The main painting and garment will be part of the show at @skiptontownhall.

A new community piece begins…

Today, our community dancers came together for their first workshop with Eliot Smith, beginning the creation of a new work inspired by a painting from the Ashington Group Collection, currently on display at Woodhorn Museum — the same collection that inspired Smith’s celebrated work PITMAN.

The workshop began with a visit to the gallery, where everyone shared their favourite painting and explored how they connected with it. From two paintings suggested by Eliot, the group then collectively chose the artwork that will inspire their new piece — to be announced soon! 🎨

After a warm-up, the dancers began creating the opening section of the work together.

We can’t wait to share more of their journey with you.

This project has been developed in partnership with Woodhorn Museum @woodhornmuseum | North East Museums @northeastmuseums, with the kind permission of the Ashington Group Trustees @ashingtongroup.

Funded by Arts Council England @aceagrams through a National Lottery Project Grant.

✨ VISION IN MOTION — 15 YEARS OF ELIOT SMITH DANCE ✨

Yesterday, we gathered at The Common Room @thecommonroomgn in Newcastle to celebrate 15 years of Eliot Smith Dance — an evening of memories, dance, gratitude and looking towards the future.

These beautiful photographs by John Lyons @johnlyons99 capture some of the moments from the evening, including the Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Lucy Winskell OBE, pictured here with ESD Chair Steph Edusei @stephedusei and Creative Director Eliot Smith @egs.1990.

A huge thank you to our brilliant dancers @yamit_salazar @amy_becke @_oliviakirk @haz_wilson00, our guest speaker CEO of Dance City @dance_city_newcastle Jennifer Curry, to everyone who joined us and shared in this special celebration, and to those who were unable to be with us but have supported Eliot Smith Dance throughout the past 15 years. Your belief, encouragement and generosity have helped shape our journey.

And a very special thank you to the Friends of Eliot Smith Dance for making yesterday’s celebration possible. Your continued friendship and support mean so much to us.
