𝓐𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓗𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓼 is an exhibition bringing together the practices of 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗯𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗱 and 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗰𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘁𝘁, currently on at @_windowgallery

𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗯𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗱 (@phoebelairdd) is a Te Whangnui-a-Tara-based artist whose practice observes cycles of growth, transformation, and urban decay in our shared spaces, questioning how material and place hold value through bringing found material into sculptural form.

𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗰𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘁𝘁 (@elisetheart) is a Tāmaki-based artist whose sculptural and installation practice uses found objects and materials in an exploration of our domestic and commercial environment, bringing our everyday encounters with nostalgia, memory, and cultures of consumerism into question.

In 𝓐𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓗𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓼, Laird and McDermott continue exploring these respective interests in their practices, focusing on our continuous relationships with infrastructure and discarded objects. An almost site specific encounter in the Window Gallery space, the works speak to their surrounding environment on the university campus, yet have a universal quality to them too. McDermott looking to the concept of convenience, and Laird to that of the streetlight, the artists’ works converge and diverge beautifully within the space, prompting a reframing of viewers’ relationships with the interior and exterior, the public and personal, the discarded and the cherished.

Meet the artists of AFTER HOURS - Elise McDermott.

Elise McDermott is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2022) and a Master of Fine Arts with First Class Honours (2025) from Whitecliﬀe College of Arts and Design. Working across sculpture and installation, McDermott employs found materials and everyday objects to explore themes of nostalgia, sentimentality, value, and belonging.

In 2024 she was awarded the Whitecliﬀe Pathway Award, and this year presented her first solo exhibition ‘Pop Sediment’ at RM Gallery. Her work is currently exhibited as part of ‘MOTHERMOTHER’ at Sanderson Gallery, has been exhibited at Depot Gallery, and is included in the Arts House Trust collection.

Our shared urban environments are inhabited by a kind of chaotic and ephemeral harmony. Through our continuous relationships with infrastructure and discarded objects, Elise McDermott and Phoebe Laird re-contextualise objects/civic materials as carriers of memory, affect and social behaviour, forming a transient theatre of subliminal urban change in the after hours of public space and consumption.

Elise McDermott’s installations investigate the sediment and signage of shared popular environments. Focusing in on convenience, she questions our sentimentality, maintenance and function of consumer objects and spaces.
Phoebe Laird’s Sculpture captures the moment when the streetlights turn on or off. Her objects hinge on disruption and care, the holding of soft and hard, light and dark, homing.

𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘴 says GO SEE • 𝘔𝘖𝘛𝘏𝘌𝘙𝘔𝘖𝘛𝘏𝘌𝘙, an intergenerational exhibition that investigates mother-centred frameworks and matriarchal futures. The artists explore the m/other through tending ecologies, care and maintenance, the evolution of the self, the hope of our matriarchal men, the grief of loss and absence, the expression of birth and the enduring power of kinship. Co-curated by Nat Tozer and Michelle Reid, the exhibition—showing at SANDERSON in partnership with mothermother—subverts hierarchies by centering an ethos of inclusivity, gift-exchange and reciprocity.
