Despite what this picture would suggest, Gaby loves hiking & Gonza does not 😂

Possible 🔥 hot take 🔥 - I didn't love Mount Si. It was a tough hike. The trail itself isn't that pretty. It's mostly through forest with lots of downed trees & endless switchbacks. No water features. No views along the way. The one cool element was the staircases. And of course, I did still like the views at the top.

But it just wasn't my favorite trail. I feel like I've gotten really spoiled by fantastic trails here where the trail is part of the ✨ magic ✨ Where the journey feels like it's the destination, as they say.

I teared up as we reached the summit.

It was nearing our "turn around time" that we had set at the start of the hike. Planning to hike 3.5 miles up 3,385 feet with a 4 pm start time was ambitious. The air was smokey and I was congested with some type of cold. I had set out at a fast and furious pace to try to make it by 6 pm so we would have time to get down before dark. My legs were burning and I was breathing hard. But we made it at 6:10 pm. And the beauty of a late afternoon summit - golden hour summit - was more spectacular than I ever could have imagined.

I've been keeping my hikes this summer to around 2k elevation gain, because I'm not in the best shape and I've been scared to try more. This hike helped me prove to myself that I am more than capable. And that felt damn good.

The shift in weather from sunshine and heat to overcast and cool has me thinking about changes. Instead of feeling bummed by the showers and clouds, I'm feeling (mostly) grateful for them - our lands are parched and burning. It's much needed. Beyond that, feeling happy about the rain is a reminder that the PNW is beautiful even when it's not sunshiney paradise.

The rains are also a reminder of changes that are to come. I had forgotten how much seasonality lends itself to reflecting on life shifts, after living many years in a place without it. We moved to Seattle almost one year ago. We just gave notice that we will be leaving our apartment and moving - this time within Seattle, though. G got his first full time teaching job at a local middle school and we couldn't be more excited for him after a long period of uncertainty. We are settling into life in Washington, and I'm anxious and eager to see what surprises are in store.

A lot of questions for us remain to be answered in our second year in Washington. Can we save enought to buy our first house next year? Is it time to think about starting our family, or should we wait a couple more years? Does G like teaching enough to enter a credentialing and masters program? Where am I trying to go professionally?

For now, I'm taking a deep breath and trusting that we will figure everything out, together. And I'm going to get outside and enjoy a classic, moody PNW day and find some clarity in the mist 🌧🧘‍♀️
