Before Reform, Restore, befote the Brexit Party, before that do you remember the UK Independence Party aka UKIP? What about in the 2010s National Action? English Defence League? Britain First? In the 70s and 80s right wing ideologies were crowned by the British National Party with their side-kick bully boys Combat 18. National Front, second iteration, birthed in 1967, was descended from the League of Empire Loyalists (LEL), a brainchild(!) of AK (not GK, that was his cousin) Chesterson. What do you recall about him? Oh, an early member of the between three wars British Union of Fascists (BUF) who split with Oswald Moseley due to differences of opinion in 1938.
AK Chesterson was a child refugee, fleeing the Boer War in 1899 to live in London. After a return to South Africa for some formative years, he resettled in Herne Hill, attending Dulwich College. As an adult he flitted between SA and Eire, wishing to join the army. He attained a Military Cross for fighting the German Army in France in WWI. His torturous life in the trenches turned him, and many other young men in similar circumstances, into an alcoholic. He had frequent nervous breakdowns, describing the world as "one vast necropolis." Regularly being thrown out of BUF meetings due to drunkeness, he was treated in Germany for his breakdowns with the bill paid by Moseley.
From 1937, Chesterson was editor of The Blackshirt, which spouted regular vile antisemitic rhetoric. Despite joining The Right Club, who's goal was to "oppose and expose the activities of Organized Jewry" in 1938, he still enlisted and served in Africa during WWII.
Dismissed for relapsing into alcoholism, Chesterson continued on his right wing political bent, being involved in "National Front after Victory" (NF after V), British Peoples Party, finally settling on the creation of the original National Front (OG!NF) in 1945. The purpose included safeguarding of a strong "national and Empire economy", preserving Christian traditions and finding "an honourable, just and lasting solution" to the "real Jewish problem".
Who would think a refugee, addict, of South African birth would influence UK right wing politics so much?

Feeling pretty proud to have captured a moment of humanity at its best. Because life means nothing if we can’t come together as one to stand against injustice.

From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. In our thousands, in our millions, we are all Palestinians.

Lots of support in Worthing town centre yesterday for resisting cuts to Disability Benefits and taxing wealth instead. We must make our MPs listen and scrap this cruel plan that will increase poverty and distress. Taxing the assets of the very small number of people with extreme wealth is a choice long overdue, growing in popularity and increasingly essential to save public services. Thanks Worthing Solidarity for organising 🙏 Let’s keep the pressure on. 💚
