Closing out the 2026 Melbourne Battle of the Tech Bands, Loop, There It Is from Mentorloop brought the mentoring framework we all deserved: riffs, nostalgia, survival and group shouting - all tied together as a classic love story 🎸

Their set had range, heart and excellent “everyone knows this bit” engineering. Guitars, 90s singalong, hands-in-the-air rock, harder-edge covers and classic Aussie pub-rock all made an appearance.

Career development had never sounded so loud.

Setlist:
- Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way
- The White Stripes - Fell in Love With a Girl
- Natalie Imbruglia/Kontrollverlust - Torn
- Bon Jovi - You Give Love a Bad Name
- Gloria Gaynor/Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - I Will Survive
- The Angels - Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again (No way...)

By the third set, Hot Property from REA Group had the room nicely warmed up, and they absolutely moved in 🏡🎸

They delivered a setlist with serious curb appeal: 2000s guitar punch, classic Aussie rock, K-pop, disco lights, a modern vocal showpiece and a full-blown rock anthem finale. It was part garage-rock party, part karaoke cathedral, part glitter inspection report. Stunning backdrops, costume changes and bubble machines rounded off this spectacular set.

Setlist:
- Avril Lavigne - Sk8er Boi
- Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
- Sophie Ellis-Bextor/Royel Otis - Murder on the Dancefloor
- Hoodoo Gurus - What’s My Scene
- Huntr/x - Golden
- Bon Jovi - Livin’ on a Prayer

Following the opening set is no easy job - particularly when you are the ring-ins from Brisbane in hostile territory - but Jumbo Band from Jumbo Interactive Limited hit the stage like someone had hotwired the PA 🤘

Their set was pure pub-rock velocity: aussie-punk, sweat, high-energy and full-voltage rebellion in one gloriously unreasonable package.

Many thanks to Jumbo who not only sponsor the national event, but agreed to jump on a plane and fill in a guest slot at the last minute. While not technically eligible for the competition, one cheeky sound engineer had them as a write-in on the voting form - with full marks!

Setlist:
- The Chats - Smoko
- Reel Big Fish - Beer
- The Killers - Mr Brightside
- The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger
- The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love
- Rage Against the Machine - Take the Power Back

There is a lot to love about Battle of the Tech Bands, but the best part is always the community 💛

In Melbourne, the bands brought noise, but the crowd brought heart: cheering every act, singing along, backing their teams, and turning the night into something bigger than a gig.

A huge thank you to our MC, Scott Bimrose for keeping the night moving, the energy up, and the chaos just organised enough to feel intentional 🎤

Most importantly, the night was all in support of Youngcare, helping create more choice, independence and dignity for young people with high physical support needs.

That’s what made the event special: people from across the tech community coming together, stepping out from behind the laptops, and using music to support a cause that matters.

To everyone who bought a ticket, a t-shirt, or a raffle ticket; played a set, cheered from the floor, volunteered, donated, sponsored, photographed, organised, or helped spread the word: thank you.

This was tech community at full volume 🤘

Opening is never easy, but Continuously Groovin from Open Universities Australia got the crowd moving, as they showcased their dancefloor syllabus for Melbourne's, Battle of the Tech Bands 🪩

Their set moved from indie-rock swagger to 80s polish, funk royalty, festival choruses and disco sparkle. It was smart, upbeat, extremely singable, and built for people who thought they were “just watching” before somehow appearing in the middle of the dancefloor.

Setlist:
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Toploader - Dancing in the Moonlight
The Killers - When You Were Young
Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor
