Just A Girl…

Hand-dyed cotton quilt structure, found objects…

Since I can remember, my parents allowed me to dress myself how I want. There were never any major fashion rules in our house, weather permitting. When I was little I often wore costumes, tulle princess dresses, velvet capes, and especially anything with sparkles. I will always appreciate the freedom that they gave me to express myself, and this childlike playfulness and flair for drama is something I occasionally have difficulty tapping into as an adult. The desire to be taken seriously hit me in elementary school, and all of a sudden I hated the colour pink. Barbie had to go especially. Even the shoelaces on my sneakers weren’t safe. Pink was too much, too bright, loud, silly, and girly, and weak. Everything pink or too closely related to it had to be eradicated on my mission to be taken seriously. Little did I know it wasn’t about the colours I was wearing, just the fact that I was a girl.

For this project, to reach into the playfulness and new attitude to the world around me, I collected pink objects over 3 months, many of them small gifts and trinkets from my loves. It began as something about consumerism and frivolity, but blossomed into a sentimental object that symbolized not only my childhood, but those around me…

Thank you So Much to everyone who helped me make this project come alive, especially @wren__wild for the custom ballet slippers, @ellaamac, my professors, and of course my parents!! @71andrew71 🤓💗🌸💓🌷🎀💞💐💖👙💕🩰🦩
